كَتَلالي البَرقِ في العا
رِضِcloudbank (word ends) ذيpossessing المُزنِrain clouds استَطاراflashed far and wide
رِضِ ذي المُزنِ استَطارا
like lightning's gleam in a cloudbank
laden with rain, flashing far and wide?
أذكَرَتنيit reminded me الوَصلَunion مِنfrom سَلـSalma (name begins)
أذكَرَتني الوَصلَ مِن سَلـ
ـمَىSalma (name ends) وَأَيّاماًand days قِصاراbrief
ـمَى وَأَيّاماً قِصارا
It reminded me of union with Salma
and brief days.
لَمdid not تُثِبreward بِالوَصلِwith union سلَمىSalma
لَم تُثِب بِالوَصلِ سلَمى
جَارَهاher neighbor إِذwhen كانَhe was جاراa neighbor
جَارَها إِذ كانَ جارا
Salma did not reward with union
her neighbor, when he was a neighbor:
عاشِقاًa lover أَفنىspent طَوالَthe long span of الدهـtime (word begins)
عاشِقاً أَفنى طَوالَ الدهـ
ـرِtime (word ends) خَوفاًin fear واستِتاراand concealment
ـرِ خَوفاً واستِتارا
a lover who spent the long span of time
in fear and concealment.
