ضَنَّتwas stingy عَقيلَةُAqila لَمّاwhen جِئتُI came بِالزّادِwith the provisions
وَآثَرَتand preferred حاجَةَthe need of الثاويthe resident عَلىover الغاديthe one departing in the morning
ʿUqayla withheld her favors when I came bearing provisions,
Aqila was stingy when I came with provisions,
preferring the resident’s need to the traveler’s.
and preferred the resident's need to the departing man's.
فَقُلتُso I said واللَهِby God لَولاwere it not for أَنthat تَقولَwould say لَهُto him
قَدindeed باحَspoke openly بِالسِّرِّabout the secret أَعدائيmy enemies وَحُسّاديand my enviers
So I said, “By God, were it not that she might tell him,
So I said: By God, were it not that they might say to him,
‘My enemies and those who envy me have let out the secret,’
“He has divulged the secret”—my enemies and enviers—
قُلناwe said لِمَنزِلِهاto her dwelling حُيِّيتَmay you be greeted مِنas a طَلَلٍruined abode
وَلِلعَقيقِand to al-Aqiq أَلاah! حُيّيتَmay you be greeted مِنas a واديvalley
we would have hailed her dwelling: ‘Greetings, O trace of a deserted camp!’
we would have said to her dwelling: “Hail, ruined abode!”
and al-ʿAqīq: ‘Ah, greetings, O valley!’”
and to al-Aqiq: “Ah, hail to you, valley!”
إِنّيindeed I جَعَلتُassigned نَصيبيmy share مِنof مَوَدَّتِهاher affection
لِمَعبَدٍto Ma'bad وَمُعاذٍand Mu'adh وابنِand the son of صَيّادِSayyad
I have allotted my share of her affection
Indeed, I assigned my share of her affection
to Maʿbad, Muʿādh, and Ibn Ṣayyād—
to Ma'bad, Mu'adh, and Ibn Sayyad,
لابنِto the son of اللَعينِthe accursed one الَّذيwho يُخباis concealed الدُخانُthe smoke لَهُfor him
وَلِلمُغَنّيand to the singer رَسولِmessenger of الزُورِfalsehood قَوّاديmy procurer
to the accursed one’s son, for whom al-Dukhān was kept hidden—
to the accursed one's son, for whom the smoke is concealed,
and to the singer, falsehood’s messenger, my procurer.
and to the singer, messenger of falsehood, my procurer.
أَمّاas for مُعاذٌMu'adh فَإِنّيso indeed I لَستُI am not ذاكِرَهُmentioning him
كَذاكَlikewise أَجدادُهُhis forefathers كانواwere لأَجداديfor my forefathers
As for Muʿādh, I shall not mention him;
As for Mu'adh, I shall not mention him;
his forefathers did the same for mine.
his forefathers played the same part for mine.
