وَما كانَ هذا الشَوقُ إِلا لجاجَةً

وَما كانَ هذا الشَوقُ إِلا لجاجَةً

عَلَيكَ وَجَرَّتهُ إِلَيكَ المَقادِرُ

عَلَيكَ وَجَرَّتهُ إِلَيكَ المَقادِرُ

And this longing was nothing but stubborn persistence

It was not but stubborn persistence upon you

In pursuing you; the decrees of fate drew it toward you.

that drew this yearning to you, O destiny!

تُخَبِّرُ والرَحمَنِ أَن لَستَ زائِراً

تُخَبِّرُ والرَحمَنِ أَن لَستَ زائِراً

ديارَ المَلا ما لاءَمَ العَظمَ جابِرُ

ديارَ المَلا ما لاءَمَ العَظمَ جابِرُ

You declare, by the Merciful, that you will not visit

It tells the Merciful that you are no visitor

The dwellings of al-Malā, as long as a bonesetter sets a bone.

to the abode of kings, though the great oppressor remains.

أَلَم تَعجَبا لِلفَتحِ أَصبَحَ ما بِهِ

أَلَم تَعجَبا لِلفَتحِ أَصبَحَ ما بِهِ

وَلا بِلِوَى الأرطَى مِنَ الحيِّ وابِرُ

وَلا بِلِوَى الأرطَى مِنَ الحيِّ وابِرُ

Have you two not marveled at al-Fatḥ? Now neither there

Have you not marveled how victory comes through it,

Nor at the sandy bend of al-Arṭā is a single soul from the tribe.

though not through firmness of hand or a piercing blade?
