And poetry is nothing but an address from an author,

in words of truth or words of falsehood.

So accept only what meets with approval,

and do not send us back like widowed women.

We saw that you did not swerve from truth to the right,

nor to the left, as a contentious wrongdoer would.

But you took the straight course with all your strength,

and follow the example of the righteous men of old.

    وَمَن ذا يَرُدُّ الحَقَّ مِن قَولِ عاذِلِ

    So we spoke, without lying, of what had become clear to us;

and who would reject the truth in a reprover's words?

And who can return an arrow after it has shot forth,

to its nock, if it has flown loose from an archer's draw?

And were it not for what caliphs had accustomed us to,

noble lords who were like valiant lions,

no sturdy she-camel would have trotted a month beneath my saddle,

wearing down the backs of deserts among the riding camels.

But we hoped from you for the like of that with which

we were sent away long ago by your noble kinsmen.

So if poetry has no place with you,

even if it is like pearls in a speaker's words,

and is apt and truthful, marred by nothing

except that it is built as houses are built,

then surely we have kinship and pure affection,

and a legacy from fathers who marched with swords,

so they drove the foe of peace from the heart of their home,

and set the pillar of religion firm after it had swayed.

For before you, a hundred full-grown camels were indeed given

to Ka'b for poetry—camels in their eighth year and fully mature ones.
