وَقَدand indeed جِئتُI came الطَبيبَthe physician لِسُقمِfor the sickness of نَفسيmy soul
لِيَشفِيَهاso he might heal it الطَبيبُthe physician فَماbut not شَفَاهاhe healed it
And indeed I came to the physician for my soul’s sickness,
I came to the doctor for the sickness of my soul
So that the physician might heal it, but he did not heal it.
For him to cure it, yet he did not cure it
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhenever سَمِعتُI heard بِأَرضِof the land of سُعدىSuʿdā
شَفانِيcured me مِنof سَقاميَmy illness أَنthat أَراهاI see her
And whenever I heard of the land of Suʿdā,
And whenever I heard of the land of bliss
Seeing her would cure me of my illness.
It cured me of my sickness just to see it
فَمنso who هَذاthis الطَبيبُthe physician لِسُقمِfor the sickness of نَفسيmy soul
سِوىother than سُعدىSuʿdā إِذاwhen شَحَطَتlay far away نَواهاher abode
So who is this physician for my soul’s sickness,
So who is this doctor for the sickness of my soul
Other than Suʿdā, when her abode lies far away?
Except for bliss, when its breeze blows
