وَبِالقَفرِand in the wilderness دارٌa dwelling مِنof جَميلَةَJamila هَيَّجَتstirred
وَبِالقَفرِ دارٌ مِن جَميلَةَ هَيَّجَت
سَوالِفَpast memories حُبٍّlove فيin فؤَادِكَyour heart مُنصِبِweary
سَوالِفَ حُبٍّ في فؤَادِكَ مُنصِبِ
And in the wilderness, a dwelling of Jamila's stirred
In the ruins, a house of a beautiful woman has stirred
memories of bygone love in your weary heart.
Tales of love in your heart that settled
وَكانَتand she was إِذاwhenever تَنأَىgrows distant نَوىًseparation أَوor تَفَرَّقَتbroke apart
وَكانَت إِذا تَنأَى نَوىً أَو تَفَرَّقَت
شِدادُstrong bonds الهَوىlove لَمdid not تَدرِknow ماwhat قَولُspeech مِشغَبِa troublemaker
شِدادُ الهَوى لَم تَدرِ ما قَولُ مِشغَبِ
And whenever distance grew great, or there were sundered
And whenever she went far or separated
the strong bonds of love, she knew nothing of a troublemaker's words.
The intensity of passion, you knew not what to say
أسيلَةُsmooth مَجرَىthe course الدَمعِof tears خُمصانَةُslender الحَشاthe waist
أسيلَةُ مَجرَى الدَمعِ خُمصانَةُ الحَشا
بَرودُcool الثَناياthe front teeth ذاتُpossessing خَلقٍa frame مُشَرعَبِtall
بَرودُ الثَنايا ذاتُ خَلقٍ مُشَرعَبِ
Smooth where tears flow, slender of waist,
Eyes flowing with tears, cheeks stained
cool of front teeth, with a tall frame.
Cool complexion, graceful nature
تَرىsees العَينُthe eye ماwhat تَهوىdesires وَفيهاand in her زيادَةٌan increase
تَرى العَينُ ما تَهوى وَفيها زيادَةٌ
مِنَof الحُسنِbeauty إِذwhen تَبدوshe appears وَمَلهىًand a delight لِملعِبِfor one who plays
مِنَ الحُسنِ إِذ تَبدو وَمَلهىً لِملعِبِ
The eye sees what it desires, and in her there is yet more
The eyes see what they desire and in it, more
beauty when she appears, and delight for one who plays.
Of beauty when she appears, a playground for the glance
