أَلاAh! هاجَstirred up التَذَكُّرُremembrance لِيin me سَقامَاsickness
وَنُكسَand a relapse of الدَاءِillness والوَجَعَand the pain الغَراماunrelenting
Ah, remembrance has stirred sickness in me,
Alas! Remembrance has stirred sickness in me,
And a relapse of illness and unrelenting pain.
And love's pain and torment have worn me down.
سَلامَةُSalāma إِنَّهاindeed she هَمّيmy sorrow وَدائِيand my sickness
وَشَرُّand the worst of الدَاءِillness ماthat which بَطَنَpenetrates العِظاماthe bones
Salāma—she is indeed my sorrow and my sickness;
Safety - indeed it is my care and remedy;
And the worst illness is that which penetrates the bones.
And the worst sickness is that which attacks the bone.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him وَدَمعُwhile the tears of العَينِthe eye يَجريflow
عَلىover الخَدَّينِboth cheeks أَربَعَةًfour سِجاماfreely flowing
So I said to him, while tears ran
So I said to him, while tears flowed
Down both cheeks in four flowing streams:
Down my cheeks in streams:
عَلَيكَit falls to you لَهاto her السَلامُthe greeting فَمَنso who لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick man
يَبيتُspends the night اللَيلَthe night يَهذيraves مُستَهاماdistraught with love
Carry my greeting to her—who will help a lovesick man
"Peace be upon you!" But what can one do for passion
Who spends the night raving, distraught with love?
That spends the night raving deliriously?
