Qadhur
فَقَدfor indeed حانَis at hand مِنfrom صَحبيmy companions الغَداةthis morning بُكورُearly departure
Ah, give before we part, Qadhur,
for my companions’ early departure this morning is at hand.
نَوالَa gift مُحِبٍّa lover غَيرnot قالٍa hater موَدعٍbidding farewell
وَداعَa farewell الفراقِof parting وَالزَّمانِand time خَتورُtreacherous
A gift to a lover, not a hater, bidding
the farewell of parting—and time is treacherous.
إِذاwhen أولجتentered the night مِنكُمfrom you بِناwith us العيسُthe pale camels أَوor غَدَتdeparted at dawn
فَلاthen no وَصلunion إِلاexcept ماwhat يجنُّconceals ضَميرُthe inmost heart
When the pale camels bear us from you into night, or depart at dawn,
then no union remains except what the heart conceals:
مَوَدَّةthe affection ذِيof one possessing وُدٍّlove تعرَّضintervenes دُونَهin his way
تَشائِيthe growing remoteness نَوىًof separation لاnot تُستَطاعُcan be endured طحورُfar-flung
a loving man’s affection, obstructed by
the remoteness of a far-flung separation beyond endurance.
فَإِنso if تَحُلِintervene الأَشغالُduties دُونbefore نَوالِكمyour favor
وَيَنأَىand grows distant المَزارُthe meeting-place فَالفُؤادُthen the heart أَسيرُcaptive
If duties stand between us and your favor,
and the meeting-place grows distant, then the heart is captive.
وَيَركُدُand stands still لَيلa night لاnot يَزالُceases تَطاوُلاًlengthening
فَقَدfor indeed كانَused to يَجلُوpass away اللَّيلthe night وَهوَwhile it قَصيرُbrief
And night stands still, ceaselessly lengthening,
for once the night would pass, and it was brief.
وَيُسعِدُناand favors us صَرفُthe turning الزَّمانof time بِوَصلِكُمwith union with you
لَيالِيَin the nights when مَبداكُمyour desert camp قذورQadhur حَصيرُHasir
And time’s turns would favor us with union with you,
in the nights when your desert camp, Qadhur, was Hasir.
وَنَفنىand we waste away وَلاand not نَخشَىwe fear الفراقَparting وَنَلتَقِيand we meet
وَلَيسَand there is no عَلَيناover us فِيin اللِّقاءِmeeting أَميرُruler
And we would waste away, fearing no parting, and meet,
and no one ruled over us when we met.
كَذلكthus صَرفُthe turning الدَّهرِof time فِيهِin it تَغَلُّطٌerror
مِراراًrepeatedly وَفيهِand in it لِلمُحِبِّfor the lover سُرورُjoy
Such are time’s turns: in them is error,
again and again, and in them a lover finds joy.
إِذاif سُرَّhe is gladdened يَوماًone day بِالوصالِby union فإِنَّهُthen it indeed
بِإسخاطِهِto anger him بَعدafter السُّرورِjoy جَديرُapt
If he is gladdened one day by union, time is
apt to anger him after joy.
لَعَمرُby the life أَبيهاof her father مَاnot جَزَتناshe has repaid us بِودِّهاwith her love
وَلاnor شكَرتهshe was grateful for it وَالكَريمand the noble person شَكورُgrateful
By her father’s life, she has not repaid us with her love,
nor been grateful for it; the noble are grateful.
وَتَنأَىand she draws away يَكادُalmost القَلبُthe heart يُبدِيreveals تَشَوُّقاًyearning
لَوَif انَّthat اشتِياقاًlonging لِلمُحِبِّto a lover يَضيرُcauses harm
And she draws away; the heart almost reveals its yearning,
if longing could harm a lover.
وَتَدنُوand she draws near فَتَنويليthen her giving to me إِذاwhen الدارُthe dwelling أَصفَنتfell silent (uncertain reading)
قَليلٌlittle وَعذلٌand reproach بَعدafter ذاكَthat كَثيرُmuch
And she draws near, but what she grants me, when the house lies silent,
is little, and the reproaches afterward are many.
فَإِنthen if زُرتI visit لَيلَىLayla بَعدafter طُولِa long period of تَجَنُّبٍavoidance
تَأَبَّضَcrouches down مَنقوصُstunted اليَدينِin both hands غَيورُa jealous man
So if I visit Layla after long avoidance,
a jealous man with stunted hands crouches down.
