فَياso, O بَعلَhusband of لَيلىLayla كَيفَhow تَجمَعُdo you combine سِلمَهاpeace with her
وَحَربيand war against me وَفيهاand over her بَينَناbetween us كانَتِwas الحَربُthe war
So, O Layla’s husband, how can you combine peace with her
and war against me, when the war between us was over her?
لَهاshe has مِثلُthe like of ذَنبِيmy guilt اليَومَtoday إِنif كُنتُI am مُذنِباًguilty
وَلاand no ذَنبَguilt ليfor me إِنif كانَit is the case لَيسَthere is not لَهاfor her ذَنبُguilt
She bears the same guilt as I do today, if I am guilty,
and I bear no guilt if she bears none.
