طافَcame visiting الخَيالُthe phantom وَطافَand came visiting الهَمُّsorrow فاعتَكَراthen they mingled
عِندَbeside الفِراشِthe bed فَباتَand spent the night الهَمُّsorrow مُحتَضِراpresent
The phantom visited, and sorrow visited; then they mingled
Beside my bed, where sorrow stayed present through the night.
أُراقِبُI watch النَجمَthe star كالحَيرانِlike one bewildered مُرتَقِباًwaiting expectantly
وَقَلَّصَand receded النَومُsleep عَنfrom عَينيَّmy eyes فانشَمَراthen fled
I watch the star like one bewildered, waiting,
And sleep receded from my eyes, then fled,
مِنfrom لَوعَةٍburning anguish أَورَثَتleft قَرحاًa wound عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver
يَوماًone day فَأَصبَحَand so became مِنهاbecause of it القَلبُthe heart مُنفَطِراtorn asunder
From a burning anguish that left a wound upon my liver
One day, and so my heart was torn apart by it.
وَمَنand whoever يَبِتspends the night مُضمِراًharboring inwardly هَمّاًsorrow كَماjust as ضَمِنَتheld
مِنّيof mine الضُلوعُthe ribs يَبِتspends the night مُستَبطِناًharboring within غِيَراcalamities
And whoever spends the night harboring sorrow like that held
Within my ribs spends the night harboring calamities.
