O Kaltham, free a captive madly in love with you,

And tighten the strands of our cord, which has been severed.

If you grant him your favor just once,

He has so often failed to escape you unscathed.

It is sorrow enough that the dwelling brings us together,

Yet I spend the evening nearby without visiting you, Kaltham.

Leave the heart be, lest its madness grow beyond what

It already suffers from you—or heal its concealed burning anguish.

And if someone's love goes no further than his tongue,

Yet love for you has settled in my heart and pitched its tent.

    وَلَكِنَّهُ قَد خالَطَ اللحمَ وَالدَّما

    Nor is it embellishment and artful phrasing of the tongue;

Rather, it has mingled with flesh and blood.
