أَلَستَare you not أَباO Abu حَفصٍHafs هُديتَmay you be guided مُخَبِّريthe one telling me
أَفيis it within الحَقِّjustice أَنthat أُقصىI am kept away وَيُدنىand is brought near ابنُthe son of أسلَماAslam
Will you not, Abu Hafs—may you be guided—tell me:
Will you not, Abu Hafs—may you be guided—tell me:
Is it right that I be kept far off while Ibn Aslama is brought near?
Is it right that I am kept away while Ibn Aslam is brought near?
أَلاis not صِلَةُmaintaining ties الأَرحامِof kinship أَدنىcloser إِلىto التُقىpiety
وَأَظهَرُand more evident فيamong أَكفائِهِhis peers لَوif تَكَرَّماhe acted generously
Is not maintaining the bonds of kinship closer to piety,
Is not maintaining kinship closer to piety,
and more evident among his peers, were he to act nobly?
and more evident among his peers, were he to act generously?
فَماfor not تَرَكَhas left الصُنعُthe deed الَّذيthat قَدindeed صَنَعتَهُyou did it
وَلاnor الغَيظُanger مِنّيof me لَيسَexcept جلداًskin وَأَعظُماand bones
The deed that you have done has left—
For the deed you have done has left me—
nor has my anger—anything of me but skin and bones.
as has anger—nothing but skin and bones.
وَكُنّاand we were ذَويpossessors of قُربىkinship لَدَيكَin your eyes فَأَصبَحَتso it became
قَرابَتُناour kinship ثَدياًa breast أَجَدَّmilkless مُصَرَّماsevered
We were kinsmen close to you, but then
And we were close kin in your eyes; but now
our kinship became a breast newly cut off.
our kinship has become a milkless, severed breast.
وَكُنتand you were وَماand what أَمَّلتُI hoped for مِنكَfrom you كَبارِقٍlike a lightning-bearing cloud

You—and all I had hoped from you—were like a lightning cloud
And you, and what I hoped for from you, were like a lightning-bearing cloud
that withheld its rain after it had grown cloud-laden.
that withheld its rain after it had grown cloudy.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتَyou were أرجَىthe most hoped for الناسِof people عِندِيin my eyes مَوَدَّةًfor affection
لَيالِيَin the nights كَانَwas الظَّنُّexpectation غَيباًan unseen mystery مُرَجَّماblindly conjectured
Yet to me you had been the most promising of all people in affection,
And of all people, you had been the one whose affection I most hoped for,
in nights when expectation was an unseen thing, merely guessed at.
in nights when expectation was a mystery, blindly guessed at.
أَعُدُّكَI count you حِرزاًa refuge إِنif جَنَيتُI commit ظُلامَةًan injustice
وَمالاًand wealth ثَرِيّاًabundant حينَwhen أَحمِلُI bear مَغرَماa financial burden
I counted you a stronghold if I committed a wrong,
I count you a refuge should I commit a wrong,
and abundant wealth whenever I had to bear a debt.
and abundant wealth when I bear a financial burden.

Set matters right, by restoring favor, with a reproachful kinsman
Win back, with amends, a reproachful kinsman
who has folded away his anger and never opened his mouth in wrath.
who folded away his anger, never opening his mouth to vent it in wrath.
