A Zubayri woman—at al-ʿArj lie dwellings of hers,
A house of Zubayriyyah in slopes, in it dwellings,
And at al-Khayf, a trace of her nearest dwellings.
And in Khaif, below its dwellings, a drawing.
أُسائِلُI ask عَنهاabout her كُلَّevery فَردٍperson لَقيتُهُwhom I met
وَماand not ليfor me بِهاof her مِنfrom بَعدِafter مَكَّتِناour Mecca عِلمُknowledge
I ask every person I have met about her,
I ask about it every individual I met,
And since our time in Mecca, I have had no news of her.
And I have no knowledge of it after our separation.
أَياO صاحِبَmaster of النَخلاتِthe palm trees مِنfrom بَطنِthe valley floor of أَرثَدٍArthad
إِلىto النَخلِthe palms مِنof وَدَّانَWaddan ماwhat فَعَلَتhas she done نُعمُNuʿm
O master of the palms, from the valley of Arthad
O owner of the palm trees from the valley of Arthad,
To the palms of Waddan—how has Nuʿm fared?
To the palm trees from Waddan, how good they are!
فَإِنfor if تَكُthere is حَربٌwar بَينَbetween قَوميmy people وَقَومِهاand her people
فَإِنّيthen indeed I لَهاtoward her فيin كُلِّevery حادِثَةٍcalamity سِلمُat peace
For if there is war between my people and hers,
So if there is war between my people and her people,
Then I am at peace with her through every calamity.
Then I am for her in every incident reconciled.
