ماno مِنany مُصيبَةِaffliction نَكبَةٍmisfortune أُمنَىI am afflicted بِهاwith it
إِلاexcept that تُعَظِّمُنيmakes me greater وَتَرفَعُand raises شانِيmy standing
No stroke of misfortune befalls me
No misfortune or calamity wished upon me
But it makes me greater and raises my standing.
Except to magnify and raise my status
وَتَزُولُand it passes حينَwhen تَزولُit passes عَنfrom مُتَخَمِّطٍa wrathful man
تُخشَىare feared بَوادِرُهُhis sudden outbursts عَلىagainst الأَقرانِrivals
And when it passes, it passes from a wrathful man
And disappear when it disappears from the wretched
Whose sudden outbursts against his rivals are feared.
Whose omens are feared by peers
إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen خَفِيَare hidden اللِئامُthe ignoble رَأَيتَنيyou see me
كَالشَّمسِlike the sun لاnot تَخفىis hidden بِكُلِّin every مَكانِplace
Indeed, when the ignoble fade from sight, you see me
When the wicked are hidden I appear
Like the sun, which is hidden nowhere.
Like the sun not obscured in any place
إِنّيindeed I عَلىdespite ماwhat قَدmay تَرَونَyou see مُحَسَّدٌmuch envied
أنميI grow عَلىdespite البَغضاءِhatred والشَنآنِand enmity
Indeed, despite what you may see, I am much envied;
However much you may see me envied
I flourish despite hatred and enmity.
I grow despite the hatred and rancor
أَصبَحتُI have become لِلأَنصارِfor the Ansar فيماin what نابَهمbefell them
خَلَفاًa successor وَلِلشُّعراءِand for the poets مِنin place of حَسَّانِHassan
For the Ansar, in what has befallen them, I have become
I have become for the supporters in what has afflicted them
A successor to Hassan—and for the poets too.
A successor, and for the poets among the refined
