وَفيand among المُصعِدينَthose ascending الآنَnow مِنfrom حيِّthe clan of مالِكٍMālik
وَفي المُصعِدينَ الآنَ مِن حيِّ مالِكٍ
ثَوىsettled شَوقُهُhis longing أَمor فيamong الخَليطِthe company المُصَوِّبِdescending
ثَوى شَوقُهُ أَم في الخَليطِ المُصَوِّبِ
And among those now ascending from Mālik's clan,
In the two elevators now from Malik's neighborhood
has his longing settled, or among the descending company?
Does his longing dwell or in the crowded confusion?
يَظَلُّhe continues عَلَيهاfor her إِنif نأَتshe went far away وَكأَنَّهُand as though he were
يَظَلُّ عَلَيها إِن نأَت وَكأَنَّهُ
صَدٍa thirsty one حائِمٌcircling about قَدalready ذيدَwas driven away عَنfrom كُلِّevery مَشرَبٍwatering place
صَدٍ حائِمٌ قَد ذيدَ عَن كُلِّ مَشرَبٍ
He keeps longing for her if she goes far away, as though he were
He lingers over her if we come as though
a thirsty one circling about, driven away from every watering place.
An obstinate barrier has warded off all approaches
فَأَنَّىhow then لَهُfor him سَلمىSalmā إِذاwhen حَلَّhe settled وانتَوىand made his home
فَأَنَّى لَهُ سَلمى إِذا حَلَّ وانتَوى
بِحلوانَin Ḥulwān واحتَلَّتand she settled بِمُزجٍat Muzj وَجُبجُبِand Jubjub
بِحلوانَ واحتَلَّت بِمُزجٍ وَجُبجُبِ
How, then, can he reach Salmā, when he has settled and made his home
So how can he reach my abode when he comes and turns
in Ḥulwān, while she has settled at Muzj and Jubjub?
Toward Helwan while it is filled with crowds and hubbub
وَلَولاand but for الَّذيthat which بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكand between you لَمnot تَجُبyou traverse
وَلَولا الَّذي بَيني وَبَينَك لَم تَجُب
مَسافَةَthe distance ماwhat بَينَbetween البوَيبِal-Buwayb وَيَثرِبِand Yathrib
مَسافَةَ ما بَينَ البوَيبِ وَيَثرِبِ
And but for what lies between me and you, you would not have crossed
And were it not for what lies between me and you, you would not answer
the distance between al-Buwayb and Yathrib.
