Did a fire’s glow appear before your eyes, or was there kindled

at Dhū al-Athl a fire from Salāmah?

That, among the meadows, tamarisks, and bān

trees, is a dwelling of ours and Salāmah’s.

That dwelling by the ghaḍā trees is desolate, though once

seekers of bounty and visitors frequented it.

It has become a ruined campsite, visible on raised ground,

which winds and rains sweep over.

    And so time carries away

people, while the dwellings and traces remain.
