Yours is what I conceal of my longing's burning thirst,
You have of my youthful passion what I conceal
and what I hide and reveal of love's pain.
And I confide the pain of love yet reveal

Remembering the days at al-Udhayb wastes me away;
Remembering the days of innocence consoles me
whoever remembers is afflicted with yearning.
And longing in the rememberer abounds

When my locks were black, and over piety was spread
When my dark-lipped beloved stretched
their shade by the green foliage of youth.
The shadows of her tresses, leaves of green youth

It was a playground whose horizons delighted us
as we strutted in the robes of youth.
When we were clad in robes of adolescence roamed

So with my panting breath and pouring tears
its landmarks came to be fanned by winds and drenched with rain.
Its features faded and were showered

And I search those haunts with my eyes
my heart recognizes them, but my eyes deny them.
My heart knows them while my eyes deny

And I restrain my overflowing fervor for it

Informs of your secret in the most hidden thoughts

So I spend the night embracing heartache, restless at heart,
So I remained embracing ardour, restless
and spend the day reproached for loving you—and excused.
Languishing in your love, and excused

Quraysh grew angry when I took leadership
with anger from which poison almost dripped.
With anger so venomous it dripped

And they resumed blaming me but I did not heed them

With hearing that lessens blame and increases it

My clan thinks it trivial that I complain of love
complain of love, while they sleep and I lie awake.
While they slumber I remain sleepless

With my lifeblood I would ransom a slender maiden, whose neck is lifted
With my praise, Hayfa raises her neck proudly
by a gazelle fawn, while a young oryx lowers her eyes.
A gazelle glancing coyly, an ostrich strutting haughtily

She visited by night, while the informers' eyelids over sleep
I came upon them and the spies were alarmed
were folded shut, and the robes of darkness were spread.
A lion bidding farewell to a deer, brown of eye

The bright stars glittered in the darkness like spearheads,
Pearls are threaded when his laughter rings
blue, embraced by murky dust.
And if I weep, from my eyelids they scatter

My sword's baldric touched the fold of her sash
So I trod the cheek of night atop a windswept hill
on honored couches, where the loincloth remained chaste.
Behind it the winds blow wildly and become confined

Then we parted, the watcher striking fear into me—
My steed prances as if amidst the clash of armies
a lion whom a dark-eyed gazelle was bidding farewell.
A fire kindled by the hooves sets his tail ablaze

Glory wraps me, its icy touch reaches
when I weep, they scatter from my eyelids.

By what right do I clothe myself in disgrace while my abode
behind which furious winds fell exhausted.

His high morals rise above piety, his gentleness
the best of caliphs, Ahmad al-Mustazhir?
Inspires hope, his might evokes caution

Prayers do not benefit those who trail the hem
the throne is proud of him, and the pulpit exults.

إنَّindeed الكَريمَthe noble person علىunder الأذىinjury لاnot يَصْبِرُendures
So I shook them from my hand, fearing their guile;
Some of them death erased, while others
a noble man will not endure injury.
In delusions remain, aware of the evils committed
وأبَىand refused لشِعْريfor my poetry أنthat أدَنِّسَهُI defile it بهِمْwith them
حَسَبيmy noble descent وسَبُّand reviling ذويthose possessing الخَناdepravity أنthat يُحقَرواthey be despised
What forbade me to defile my poetry with them
The Fate effaces the renowned white fox
was my noble descent; reviling the foul is to hold them in contempt.
When the dark herd does not deter him from vice
قابَلْتُI met سيّئَthe evil of ماwhat أتَوْاthey did بجَميلِwith the good of ماwhat
آتيI do فإنّيfor indeed I بالمكارِمِof noble deeds أجْدَرُmore worthy
I met the evil of what they did with the good
Their group is fragmented - how many a watering place
I do, for I am more worthy of noble deeds.
Is for the oppressors yet has no source for them!
وأبادَand destroyed بعضَهُمُsome of them المَنونُdeath وبَعْضُهُمْand some of them
فيin القِدِّleather fetters وهْوَwhile he بماof what جَناهُhe committed أبصَرُmore aware
Death destroyed some of them, while others
And to the Commander of the Faithful inclines
are in leather fetters, well aware of what they committed.
Praise like meadows blossoming, adorning
والأبيضُand the bright sword المأثورُpatterned يَخْطِمُbridles بالرّدىwith death
مَنْwhoever لاnot يُنَهْنِهُهُrestrains him القَطيعُthe lash الأسمَرُbrown
The bright, patterned sword bridles with death
Appointing their assembly by dark night
him whom the brown lash cannot restrain.
And gathering its wanderers by brilliant morn
فارْفَضَّso scattered شملُهُمُtheir company وكمْand how many مِنْa مَوْرِدٍwatering place
للظّالِمينَfor oppressors وليْسَand there is no عنهُfrom it مَصْدَرُway out
So their company scattered; how many a watering place
With obedience like his, guidance is sought
there is for oppressors, with no way out!
With grace like his, nobility is restored
وإِلىand toward أميرِthe Commander of المؤمنينَthe Faithful تطَلَعَتْrose
مِدَحٌpraises كماas ابتَسَمَsmiled الرِّياضُthe gardens تُحَبَّرُare embellished
Toward the Commander of the Faithful have risen
praises, adorned like smiling gardens.
ويقيمُand steadies مائِدَهُنtheir wavering ones لَيلٌa night مُظلِمٌdark
ويضُمُّand gathers شارِدَهُنَّtheir wandering ones صُبحٌa dawn مُسْفِرُradiant
A dark night steadies their wavering verses,
and a radiant dawn gathers their wandering verses.
فبِمِثْلِso through the like of طاعَتِهِhis obedience الهِدايَةُguidance تُبْتَغىis sought
وبفَضْلِand through the abundance of نائِلِهِhis gifts الخَصاصَةُwant تُجْبَرُis remedied
Through obedience like his, guidance is sought,
and through the abundance of his gifts, want is remedied.
