Who are the riders before me, O son of al-ʿĀmirī?
Who is this caravan, O son of Al-Amiri, ahead of me?
Are they dawn's secret in the heart of darkness?
Are they the secret of dawn in the conscience of darkness?

The yearning lover's heart escorts them, and sometimes
My longing heart bids them farewell, and perhaps
it is led by a halter toward what brings it grief.
It leads them to what has saddened it by the bridle.

And Suʿdā has been miserly: no dream-vision visits by night,
My good fortune was stingy, so neither the specter came by at night,
nor is my greeting returned to me.
Nor is my greeting brought back to me.

A slender maiden against whose gaze the oryxes seek redress,
You glance at them slyly with your fluttering eyes,
and who robs the bān's supple branch of its graceful stature.
Robbing the full moon of its beauty and form.

How much thirst is in my heart for you -
for sips from behind a veil.
I quench it with sips from behind the veil.

Yet I have not tasted your mouth, though I repeat
tales recounted by balsam branches.
Tales spread by the branches of Basham.

A love: time's vicissitudes have come between me and it;
Passion intervened between us, so I lead
I rend my breaths for it, and they bleed.
My breaths to it while it remains.

And it has left me sorrows' wasted mount; they are stirred
It left me the awakening of sorrows, stirred
by doves' song or clouds' weeping.
By the cooing of a dove or the crying of clouds.

I yearn for the days at Aqeeq, when
with four eyelids streaming at their remembrance.
Four dwellings bent me with the bridle of my mount.

And can I make myself forget life so fresh, as though it
Can I forget that fresh life, as if
had been lent the greenness of a youth's cheek-down?
It borrowed greenness in the prime of youth?

In a land where the meadow along its flanks seems
In a land where gardens in its folds
to trail the hems of striped cloth over the hillocks.
Drag the train of the headband above the dunes.

When the wind brushes its pools, you imagine it
When its perfumed locks are uncovered by the wind,
tracing a pattern along a sword's edge.
It leaves a trace in the stirrups of swords.

And ʿarār flowers sleep around them, as though the pools
The knights slept around it as if
were passing a cup of wine among the blossoms.
It passed the cup of wine amongst the lamps.

There we outran time's hazards toward our desires,
We outdistanced the suspicion of time in it,
though our ears were pregnant with reproach.
Though our ears were stung by blame.

And among my free-hearted impulses, when passion leads me,
Of my meadows, when passion leads me there,
I snap my bridle, though the reprover takes offense.
I alight even if the censurers disapprove.

And the days have never ceased to incite separation against us,
The days continue to entice our purpose
trailing the twin hems of malice and ferocity.
And drag the train of my mantle and lance.

I see it jealous over my good fortune as if
they shared our longing and consuming love.
It has what we have of infatuation and love.

Oh, if only when she pulls me into her company
they would forsake love for her, or bear my sickness.
She would leave her passion or I would fall ill!

By the life of lofty honors—an Umayyad oath—
By the glory of the Umayyad dynasty,
time has surely barred every goal to me.
Fate has barred all my hopes.

Has it no scope among the basest of people?
As for the vices of people, there is leeway for him
Then how long will it need none but the noble?
Whose nature needs no glory but generosity.

After the guide's arrows have disappeared.

My carriers of needs unload their luggage
before a noble, magnanimous man with a spacious courtyard.
At the glorious, expansive threshold of the noble one.

I spur my dogs against him reverently
that eyes, though raised high, are lowered before him.
So eyes avert as they approach.

Of a people: glory has never sought sparks from their fire-stick
Among the people, glory's flint did not spark for anyone
in boasting without their kindling a blaze.
In pride unless they lit it with steel.

And they do not stumble except on the corpses of boys

Who satisfy the watcher's craving.

From his pens and swords we glimpse
an abode of life in death's creeping path.
The stirrings of life in the swaying of a dove.

Like the flowing of two springs' confluence.

With wisdom, when perils arise for him,

He repels them with a languid, decisive blow.

So glory to God, whose brilliance has outshone the stars,
that has set you on the loftiest peak and crest.
Elevating you to the highest summit.

Among a people asleep, not tending to them.

Because of you, the thoughts that were dispersed
that have robbed coral beads of every ordered string.
Have stripped coral beads of all their stringing.

You walk thankfully with hidden remembrance, praised,
speaking softly to the tongues of an Iraq-bound traveler and a Syrian.
As my fervent tongue converses with me.

Yet not every ear is pleased with my speech.

I used to refuse to be content though my echo was pure
except with a brimming watering-place, sweet at its approach.
Other than a freshwater spring or cloudy sky.

And the dwellings honored us, I pitched my tent pegs.
