وَمَسْرَىand the night path العِزِّglory فيalong ظُبَةِthe edge الحُسامِthe sword
Victory's noonday rest is beneath canopies of battle dust,
The path of victory in the shades of darkness,
And glory's night path lies along the sword's edge.
And the course of glory in the thickets of swords,
وَليand I have هِممٌambitions جَثَمْنَthey crouched علىupon ضُلوعٍribs
تُلَفُّare wrapped مِنَbecause of الهُمومِcares علىaround كِلامِwounds
And I have ambitions crouched upon ribs
I have resolves that crouched on ribs,
Wrapped by cares around wounds.
Which are wrapped in worries upon worries,
تَمُرُّpass بِهاover them الخُطوبُcalamities وَهُنَّand they are شُوسٌfierce
فَتَقْرِفُهاthen they scrape them بِأَظْفارٍwith claws دَوامِbloodied
Calamities pass over them, fierce,
Difficulties pass by them, yet they are fiery,
Then scrape them with bloodied claws.
So they withstand them with lasting claws,
وَقَلْبيand my heart يَطْمئِنُّsettles بِهِin it الْتِياحٌburning thirst
أَضُمُّI clasp حَشايَmy breast مِنْهُfrom it عَلىaround ضِرامِa blaze
And burning thirst settles in my heart;
And my heart is reassured by this comfort,
I clasp my breast around the blaze it kindles.
I gather its warmth upon my chest,
وَلاand not أَصْبوI yearn إِلىfor رِيٍّquenching of thirst ذَليلٍhumiliating
إِذاwhen صَادَفْتُI find عِزِّيmy honor فيin أُوامِيmy burning thirst
Nor do I yearn to quench my thirst in abasement,
I do not aspire to an easy, humiliating path,
When I find my honor in my burning thirst.
If I meet my glory during my lifetime,
سَتُجْلَىwill be cleared away غَمْرَةُengulfing turmoil الحَدَثانِtime's misfortunes عَنِّيfrom me
وَماand not مَلَكتْhas held عَلَيَّover me يَدٌa hand زِمامِيmy reins
The engulfing turmoil of time will be lifted from me,
The cloud of youth will dissipate from me,
And no hand has mastered me by holding my reins.
And no hand has ever controlled my reins,
فَضَوءُfor the light الصُّبْحِdawn مُرْتَقَبٌawaited لِسارٍfor a night traveler
تَرَدَّدhe wandered بَيْنَamong أَثْناءِfolds الظَّلامِthe darkness
For dawn's light is awaited by a night traveler
So the light of dawn is awaited by one wandering
Who has wandered among the folds of darkness.
Between the folds of darkness.
