بَنيO sons of جُشَمٍJusham ردُّواreturn فؤاديَmy heart إِنَّهُindeed, it
بحيثُat the place where الخدودُthe cheeks البيضُthe fair والأَعينُand the eyes النُّجْلُthe wide
Sons of Jusham, return my heart, for it is
O people of Jusham, return my heart, for it
where the fair cheeks and wide eyes are.
Longs for the white cheeks and the sparkling eyes.
وإِنand if ضلَّit strays عنكمaway from you فانشدوهُthen seek it علىat الحِمىthe protected pasture
فثَمَّfor there مكانٌa spot مِنof فؤاديَmy heart لاnot يَخلوis empty
And if it has strayed from you, seek it in the protected pasture;
And if it strays from you, call for it over the tribe,
for a spot there is never without my heart.
For in my heart there is a place that is never empty of you.
فإِنso if لَمnot تردوهُyou return it أَقَمتُI shall remain لديكمُwith you
صَريعَlaid low غرامٍpassion ماnot أُمِرُّI turn bitter وماand not أَحلوI turn sweet
If you do not return it, I shall remain with you,
If you do not return it, I will lay down before you
laid low by passion, neither bitter nor sweet.
A slain victim of love - neither bitter nor sweet.
وإِنand if قُلتمُyou say هَلّاwhy not سلَوتَyou forgot your love ظَلمتُمُyou have wronged
إِذاif كانَis قَلبيmy heart عندَكمwith you فَمتىthen when أَسلوI forget my love
And if you say, 'Why have you not forgotten?' you wrong me;
And if you say, "Why don't you find solace?" you would wrong me,
if my heart is with you, when can I forget?
For if my heart is with you, when can I find solace?
بَنيO sons of جُشَمٍJusham اللَّهَGod اللَّهَGod فيconcerning دَميmy blood
فطالبهُfor its avenger اللَّهGod الَّذيwho قولُهHis word الفِعلُthe deed
Sons of Jusham, fear God, fear God regarding my blood!
O people of Jusham, I implore you by God, have mercy on my soul
For its avengers are God, whose word is deed,
God, whose word is action, is its seeker.

and beardless youths on sleek steeds, with hands stretched
And spears over coats of mail held by hands that extend
toward mighty honor by caliphs and messengers.
To the mighty honor - the successors and the messengers.
دَمٌblood أُمويٌّUmayyad ليسdoes not يسكنُsubside فورُهُits boiling
وماand nothing بعدَهafter it إِلّاexcept الفِرارُflight أوor القَتلُslaughter
Umayyad blood, whose boiling never subsides;
It is Umayyad blood that does not cease raging,
and after it comes nothing but flight or slaughter.
And nothing comes after it but fleeing or death.
أَلمdid … not? يَكُthere be فيin عثمانَUthman للناسِfor the people عِبرَةٌa lesson
فَلاso do not تُرخِصوهُdeem it cheap ضِلَّةin folly إِنَّهfor it يغلوcommands a high price
Was there not in Uthman a lesson for the people?
Was not the fate of Uthman an example for people?
So do not cheapen it in folly; it commands a high price.
So do not make his error lawful, for he transgressed.
وَلولاand were it not for الهَوىlove سارَتwould have marched إِليكمtoward you كتائبٌbattalions
يُعضِّلgrows choked مِنbecause of نجديهاtheir Najdi contingent الحَزْنُrugged ground وَالسَّهلُand the plain
And but for love, battalions would have marched against you,
Were it not for passion, battalions would have marched to you,
whose Najdi contingent would choke rugged ground and plain.
Saddened by the sorrow and the easy ground.
ولمand not أَستَطِبْI relished شَمَّthe scent العَرارِʿarār wildflowers ولاnor أَتىbrought
بيَme الرَّملُthe sands حبِّيmy love أَهلَهُits people سُقِيَmay it be watered الرَّملُthe sands
Nor would I have relished the scent of ʿarār flowers, nor would
But I could not bear the scent of camel-hair tents, nor did
my love for its people have brought me to the sands—may the sands be watered!
The sands bring to me the people of my love - may the sands be watered.
