رأتsaw أُمُّUmm (mother of) عَمروٍʿAmr يَومَthe day سارَتshe departed مَدامِعيmy tears
تَنُمُّtell بِسرِّيof my secret فيin الهَوىlove وَتُذيعُهُand divulge it
On the day she departed, Umm ʿAmr saw my tears
betraying my secret love and making it known.
فَقالَتْso she said أَهَذاis this دأبُthe habit عَينِكَof your eye إِنَّنيindeed I
أَراهاI see it إِذاwhenever اِستُودِعْتَyou are entrusted سِرّاًa secret تُضيعُهُit lets it slip
She said, “Is this your eye’s habit? Indeed, I
see it betray a secret whenever you are entrusted with one.”
وَكَيفَand how أَرُدُّcan I hold back الدَّمعَthe tears وَالوَجدُwhile longing هاتِفٌis calling
بِهِfor them وَعلىand incumbent upon الإِنسانِa person ماwhat يَستَطيعُهُthey can do it
And how can I hold back tears when longing calls
for them? A person is bound only to what they can do.
