O tribe, if you depart early,
O you who lives, if you depart early,
then linger a little for those bidding farewell.
Then bid the ones bidding farewell a little.

With the caravan is a gazelle who fells lions
With the caravan is a gazelle felling the mature,
with an eye like a polished Mashrafi sword.
With an eye like polished silver.
بَرَزَتshe emerged لِلوَداعِfor farewell فاِستَودَعَتthen she deposited قَلْheart (word fragment)
بيَmy (completes 'my heart') وَجداًlonging وَصَبوَةًand amorous yearning وَغَليلاand burning thirst
She came forth for farewell, leaving in my heart
She came out to bid farewell, so she bid farewell to my heart,
longing, amorous yearning, and burning thirst.
And anguish, and yearning, and sickness.
وَمَرَتْand drew forth أَدمُعيmy tears مَطاياmounts تَرامَتْsped away
بسُلَيمَىwith Sulayma تَوَقُّصاًat a trot وَذَميلاand at a swift, smooth gait
The mounts that sped away drew forth my tears,
And my tears passed by water-skins leaked;
bearing Sulayma at a trot and a swift, smooth gait.
My night journey was in fragments and patches.
وَأَبىand refused الحُبُّlove أَنthat يَكونَbe عَزائيmy resignation
بَعدَafter ذاكَthat الوَجهِthe face الجَميلِbeautiful جَميلاgraceful
And love refused to let my resignation be
And love refused that after that beautiful face
graceful after that beautiful face.
There would be for me any consolation beautiful.

My body bears a wasting; in Sulayma's waist
And my waist complained from Suleima’s waist;
is its like, so it remains ever slender.
The like of it is not straight and pliant.

My cure for it is a breeze that comes each morning
And my healing from it is a breeze visiting me
to me, and an eye that gazes languidly at me.
And a glance glancing to me, infirm.

Have you heard, O dwellers in the land of Najd,
Have you heard, O dwellers of the land of Najd,
of two ailing ones who heal a sick man?
Of two patients who heal a patient?
