ياO رَبَّةَlady البُرْقُعِthe veil كَمْhow many غُلَّةٍa burning thirst
حَامَتْhovered عَلىover ماwhat ضَمَّهُenfolded it البُرْقُعُthe veil
O lady of the veil, how many a burning thirst
O lady of the veil, how heavy
Has hovered over what the veil enfolds!
is the veil that covers you.
وَفَوَّقَتْand nocked عَيْنُكِyour eye ليfor me أَسْهماًarrows

And your eye has nocked arrows for me;
Your eyes have shot arrows at me
Coats of mail could not withstand their blows.
that no armor can defend against.
هَبِيsuppose المَطايَاthe mounts فَرَّقَتْseparated بَيْنَنَاbetween us
لاmay not فَارَقَتْهاleave them أَبَداًever أَنْسُعُgirths
Suppose the mounts have parted us—
Away with separation that parts us;
May girths never leave them!
never shall it make me less ardent.
وَنَمَّand betrayed ماwhat تُظْهِرُهُreveal it أَعْيُنٌeyes
مِنَّاof ours بِماof what تُضْمِرُهُconceal it أَضْلُعُribs
And what eyes reveal has betrayed
What eyes reveal or hearts conceal
What ribs conceal within us.
I see in you, whom I so fervently seek.
فَلِمْthen why قَساgrew hard قَلْبُكِyour heart فيin مَوْقفٍa situation
رَقَّتْgrew tender بِهِin it الأَلْفاظُthe words وَالأَدْمُعُand the tears
Then why did your heart grow hard at a moment
Why then this hardness of your heart
When words and tears grew tender?
when words and tears both plead?
