سَناthe glow نارٍof a fire عَلىat بُعدِa distance
My companions saw at Kazima
My friend saw in Kazima
the glow of a fire in the distance.
A firelight in the distance
وَفيمَنْand among those who يَستَضيءُseek light بِهاfrom it
فَتاةٌa maiden صَلْتَةُsmooth الخَدِّof cheek
And among those who take light from it
And in its light, a girl
is a smooth-cheeked maiden.
With cheeks like sliced melon
وَتُذكيهاand she kindles it عَلىwith خَفَرٍbashfulness
بِأَعوادٍwith sticks مِنَof الرَّندِlaurel
And bashfully she feeds it
She fuels it with rhododendron sticks
with sticks of laurel.
Her cheek once grazed
هيَshe الخَودُthe lovely maiden الَّتيwho فَرَعَتْhas scaled
بِقَيسٍwith Qays ذِروَةَthe summit المَجدِof glory
She is the lovely maiden who has scaled
The summit of glory with Qais
with Qays the summit of glory.
It can eclipse the earth if she shakes
تُواريshe conceals الأَرضَthe ground إِنif خَطَرَتْshe walks gracefully
بِذاكَwith that الفاحِمِjet-black الجَعْدِcurly
She veils the ground when she walks gracefully
That burning black hair
with that jet-black, curly hair.
She scented her feet
وَقَدand already أَرِجَتْhave become fragrant مَواطِئهاher footprints
برَيّاwith the scent العَنبَرِof ambergris الوَردِrose-hued
And her footprints have grown fragrant
With ambergris and rose
with the scent of rose-hued ambergris.
Nejd is her home, and in it
وَنَجدٌand Najd دارُهاher home وَبِهِand in it
شَباthe points الخَطِّيَّةِof Khatti spears المُلْدِsupple
And Najd is her home, and there
The most delicate sand-grouse
are the points of supple Khatti spears.
And I have a yearning she ignites
وَبيand within me شَوقٌlonging تُلَقِّحُهُfertilize it
تَباريحٌagonies مِنَof الوَجدِpassionate love
And within me is longing, quickened by
With zephyrs of rapture
the agonies of passionate love.
Remembering her makes me weep
وَيُبكينيand makes me weep تَذَكُّرُهُremembering it
فَياso, O لَهَفيmy anguish عَلىfor نَجدِNajd
And remembering it makes me weep—
Oh, my craving for Nejd!
so, how I ache for Najd!
