May rain bless Kūfan, a land that, when recalled,

stirs longings despite the remoteness of home.

Its soil's root grows sweet through every young man

of my family, noble in ancestry and character.

Muʿāwiya, son of the noblest fathers, turned

eyes and necks toward glory, himself one of them.

Beneath the shade of tawny spears, in their midst roams

a milk-fed mare, trampling skulls into fragments.

So each of them, when his wrath is provoked,

throws his whole weight into the champions' fray.

He adorned spears and necks with heads and lavish gifts:

crowns in war, and necklaces in peace.

And if you summon him when calamities cast their shadow,

he tucks up his hem until it reaches halfway up his shin.
