May a cloud's rain water Hamadan,
Hamadhan watered a lively meadow,
from which time gains cheerfulness,
From which time benefits in eloquence.
بِرَعدٍwith thunder كَماas جَرجَرَrumbled الأَرحَبيُّthe Arhabi camel
وَبَرقٍand lightning كَماas بَصبَصَflicked its tail الأُفعوانْthe male viper
with thunder like an Arhabi camel's rumbling,
With thunder like Arhabi's rumbling,
and lightning like a male viper flicking its tail.
And lightning like the viper's flashing.
فَسَفحُso the mountain's foot المُقَطَّمِof al-Muqattam بِئسَhow wretched البَديلُthe substitute
نَبيهاًrenowned وَأَروَندُand Arwand نِعمَhow excellent المَكانْthe place
So the foot of al-Muqattam is a wretched substitute,
The terrain of the fragmented pour is a poor substitute,
renowned though it be; and Arwand is an excellent place.
Nabiha is brilliant and Arwand is an excellent place.
هيَit الجَنَّةُparadise المُشتَهىlonged for طِيبُهاits fragrance
وَلَكِنَّbut فِردَوسَهاits paradise ماوَشانْMawashan
It is paradise, whose fragrance is longed for,
It is the coveted paradise, pleasant is its scent,
but its paradise is Mawashan.
But its prime is Mawshan.
فَأَلواحُso the sheets أَمواهِهاof its waters كالعَبيرِlike perfume
تُرىis seen as أَرضُهاits earth وَحَصاهاand its pebbles الجُمانْpearls
So the sheets of its waters are like perfume;
The tablets of its waters are like perfume,
its earth and pebbles are seen as pearls.
Its ground and pebbles are pearls.
