فمَتى يفي لَكَ والوَفاءُ قَليلُ
It is her phantom, and its night visit is mere consolation.
Her phantom and her fragrance are excuses
When will it keep faith with you, when faithfulness is scarce?
When will fidelity suffice for you, though it is little?

Its visit is like the flash of lightning;
Her visitation gleamed like flashing lightning
The damp crosswind called aloud to it.
Misfortunes cried out to it, though they are insignificant

Its flashes appeared; one stricken by drought sang in delight.
Its radiance dazzled, so an emaciated man reeled
Then it passed: neither promise nor bounty.
And it passed; neither number nor interpretation remained

O Umaym, if you resemble it in breaking promises,
Do I censure, if her likeness in her absence
Promise-breaking is ugly, yet from you it is beautiful.
Resembles you? Absence is ugly, even coming from you, it is beautiful

Quenched a lover's burning thirst.
Healed the anguished lover’s sickness

The stature from the meadows of youth is bending
And your gaze is languid with luxurious ease.
The eye from the leisure of bliss is sick

And your waist is slender, so its sash remains
The waist has thinned, so its wrap still
Restless, while what the waistcloth hides is heavy.
Flutters, though the loincloth is not heavy

Restrain your coy pride: toward estrangement
Be stern with indulgence, for as long as
It points, so long as weariness brings it on.
Boredom attracts it, habit is its guide

Leave the slanderers, for everything they have adorned
An explanation at our meeting will dispel.
Meaning with, interpretation will remove at the meeting

Beyond your union, brief in duration,
Beyond your brief union, its time
Lies a long estrangement, as the jealous one desired.
Is separation, however long the jealous one has made it

The pain of parting—Malik and Aqil.
The pain of parting, then Malik and Aqil would not have

And if you turn away, between us lies an uncharted waste,
If you turn away, then between us is an unknown path
Where the caravan has plaintive cries and wailing.
To travelers on it, there is ringing and wailing

The winds blow violently on it, terrified
And moan for fear of losing their way.
And for them, avoiding straying is difficult

I, the riding camels, and the wing of a dark night—
I, the steed, and the wing of a dark night
And should humiliation descend, departure is mine.
And for me, if disgrace descends, departure is escape

For estrangement brings more ease, and hopes are delusion,
So separation is more fragrant, and hopes are errors
If a covenant changes or a friend gives cause for doubt.
If an era passes or a friend nears

Seeking new companions ill becomes a young man,
The alienation of friends is ugly in the youth
But the remedy for a faithless man is replacement.
But the cure for the betrayer is substitution

A home grows restless, departure unsheathes my resolves.
A house, determination changes them

From a people whose high-mindedness is a trait

Theirs is the Most High and the watcher from the ascension
And through them a caster cast the arrows of those heights.
By them the clouds poured forth their rain, beautiful

In this spacious earth - my camp settled?

With odes the nights hardened and
In them, and morning and evening grew gentle.
From them, dawn and nightfall parted

And they pastured on the liveliness of spring, and around it
Stood a protector, guaranteeing what expectations promised.
A neighbor with what hopes promise guarantor

The scales of its armor were spread from a body
Who guards his honor, with spearheads for a thicket.
That protects the truth while tongues babble

Alas! Time will never birth its equal
Time is indeed miserly with the likes of him.
Time with its like is really stingy

It shone at the tune of a poet or visitor
A camel's rumble called, and a horse's neigh replied.
And a murmur called, so a whinny responded

Easy now: the stars have not drawn near to one who longs
Wait! The stars do not come near for an ambitious one
To attain them; is there a path to that?
In attaining them - is there a way to them?

It is as if it were the cheeks' roses when modesty covered them
In a blush, and kisses almost melt them.
And almost melted them away with kisses

With generosity—revelation would have proclaimed its excellence.
Generously - inspiration would have flourished through its grace

Where is the distance, when you have reached the highest
