مَنwhom أَرتَجيI look to with hope وَإِلىand to ماwhat يَنتَهيreaches أَرَبَيmy desire
وَلَمand have not أَطأI tread صَهواتِbacks السَبعَةِthe seven الشُهُبِthe shining ones
In whom shall I place my hopes, and how far shall my desire reach,
Who do I hope for and to what end do I wander
while I have not trodden the backs of the seven shining planets?
Without treading the blazing trails of the seven planets
ياO دَهرُTime هَبنيَsuppose that I لاnot أَشكوI complain إِلىto أَحَدٍanyone
ماhow ظَلَّhas remained مُنتَهَساًgnawed شِلويmy flesh مِنَby النُّوَبِcalamities
O Time, suppose I complain to no one
O fate grant me, I complain to no one
of how my flesh is ever gnawed by calamities.
Of what remains downtrodden, my strength sapped by tribulation
فَكَمso how much تُجَرِّعُنيyou make me swallow غَيظاًrage تَفورُseethe بِهِwith it
جَوانِحٌribs بِتُّI spent the night أَطويهاI fold them عَلىaround لَهَبِa flame
How much rage you make me swallow, with which seethe
How much rage you make me swallow, boiling within
the ribs I spent the night folding around a flame!
Limbs folded, I restrain over raging flames
تَرَكتَنيyou left me بَينَamong أَيديhands النَّائِباتِcalamities لَقىًa castoff
فَلاso neither عَلىupon حَسَبيmy honor تُبقيyou spare وَلاnor نَسَبيmy lineage
You left me a castoff in the hands of calamities,
You left me to the hands of misfortune, exposed
so you spare neither my honor nor my lineage.
Regardless of my standing or lineage
يُريكshows you وَجهيmy face بشاشاتِcheerful smiles الرِّضىcontentment كَرَماًout of magnanimity
وَالصَدرُand the breast مُشتَمِلٌenclosing مِنِّيof mine عَلىaround الغَضَبِanger
My face shows you smiles of contentment, out of magnanimity,
My face shows you happy smiles as courtesy
while my breast harbors anger.
While my chest harbors anger toward you
هَلis there فيamong أُهَيلِكَyour paltry folk غَيريother than me مَنanyone who تُزانُyou are adorned بِهِby him
أَمor هَلdo لَهُمthey have حينwhen يُعزىancestry is traced مِنany أَبٍfather كَأَبيlike my father
Among your paltry folk, is there anyone but me who adorns you?
Is there anyone else in your family equal to me?
Or have they, when ancestry is traced, any father like mine?
Or do they have a father like mine when consolation is needed?
مَتىwhenever تَعُدُّcount بَنيهاtheir sons أَعصُرٌages سَلَفَتْhave passed
فَأَنتَthen you تُربيyou excel عَلَيهاover them حينَwhen تَفخَرُyou boast بِيof me
Whenever bygone ages count their sons,
When will its eras count a vintage that passed?
then you surpass them when you boast of me.
Yet you raise over it while boasting of me
أَماhave you not عَلِمتَyou learned وَخَيرُand the best القَولِspeech أَصدَقُهُits truest
أَنَّthat المَطامِعَcovetous desires لاnot أُرخِيI loosen لَهاfor them لَبَبيmy breast-strap
Have you not learned—and the best speech is the truest—
Don't you know—and the best words are the truest—
that I do not loosen my breast-strap for covetous desires?
That I do not yield to greed or whims
إِنif هَزَّنيstirs me اليُسرُprosperity لَمdo not أَنهَضI rise عَلىin مَرَحٍexultation
أَوor مَسَّنيtouches me العُسرُhardship لَمdo not أَجثِمI crouch عَلىin لَغَبِexhaustion
If prosperity stirs me, I do not rise in exultation;
If ease lifts me I do not revel in delight
or if hardship touches me, I do not crouch in exhaustion.
Or if hardship touches me I do not crouch in despair
حَسبُenough for الفَتىthe young man مِنof غِناهُhis wealth سَدُّsatisfying جَوْعَتِهِhis hunger
فَكُلُّfor all ماthat يَقتَنيهِhe acquires it نُهزَةُprey العَطَبِdestruction
A young man needs only enough wealth to satisfy his hunger;
A young man's worth is slaking his hunger
for all he acquires is prey to destruction.
So all he acquires is the trappings of ruin
