َقولُI say (opening apparently truncated) وَالفَخْرُand boasting ماthat which اهْتَزَّthrilled النَّدِيُّthe assembly لَهُin response to it
وَلَمْand did not يُنَشِّرْهُunfurl it مَطْوِيٌّone wrapped عَلىin فَنَدِfalsehood
I say—and boasting is what stirs the assembly,
Boasting and pride do not sway unless the palm tree sways to them,
and is not unfurled by one wrapped in falsehood.
And they are not spread by a folder upon a carpet.
نَحْنُwe الأُلىthose who مَلَكَruled الدُّنْياthe world أوَائِلُناour forebears
فَمَجْدُهُمْso their glory يَسِمُbrands الأَعْناقَthe necks بِالصَّيَدِwith proud neck-stiffness
We are those whose forebears ruled the world,
We are the foremost who ruled the world; our ancestors,
so their glory brands our necks with proud stiffness.
Their glory brands necks with conquest.
وَماand not سَعىstrove والِدٌa father مِنّاamong us لِمَكْرُمَةٍfor a noble deed
لَمْdid not تَحْتَضِنْembrace مِثْلَهاits equal المَسْعَاةُthe endeavor for honor مِنْof وَلَدِa son
And no father among us strove for a noble deed
No father of ours ever strove for an honor,
whose equal a son's endeavor did not embrace.
That exertion did not embrace the like from a son.
فَظَلَّthus remained تَالِدَةًinherited فيناamong us وَطارِفَةًand newly acquired
عُلاًlofty glory تَرِفُّflutter حَواشيهاits fringes عَلىabove الحَسَدِenvy
Thus there remained among us, inherited and newly won,
So it continued as innate in us, and as a habit,
lofty glory whose fringes flutter above envy.
Sublimity that its edges overflow with envy.
إِذاwhen انْتَسَبْناwe declare our lineage أَحَبَّwished النّاسُpeople أَنَّهُمُthat they
مِنّاof us وَلَمْand did not نَرْضَwe consent أَنْto نُعْزَىbe ascribed إِلىto أَحَدِanyone
When we declare our lineage, people wish that they were
When we trace our lineage, people love that they are
of us; yet we have never consented to be ascribed to anyone.
Of us, and we do not accept to be affiliated with anyone.
