He drew aside, while night had luxuriant wings,
The night uncovered the adornments of the pavilion
The veil of dawn from the sun's smiling mouth—
From the smile of the sun the veil of dawn

ويَنْثَني فالقَدُّ نَشْوانُ صاحْ
A sweetly nasal-voiced youth, seized by youth's exuberance,
The passing breeze sings its melody
And he sways, his figure drunken yet sober.
And the bending branches sway gently at dawn

Like a shaken bough, visited again and again
Like a tottering structure accustomed
In languor by the breezes of the winds.
To the gentle breaths of the winds

He crosses the wastes late at night; already unfurled
It folds the twigs weakened while
Are the fire's tresses by Quraysh of al-Bitah.
The flames of fire ignited the shrubs

Where the red domes are surrounded
By dark lances and white sword-blades.
By white marble and gray stone

Darkness loosened its binding wrap as he traveled by night,
Darkness wrapped its gowns when
And night's sanctuary is open to the full moon.
The night left the moon free to roam

When drowsiness hovered in his eyes,
When the fates frown in their eyes
He gazed with eyelids ailing yet sound.
They cry with diseased eyelids at dawn

And if his jewelry gave him away, he was alarmed
And if dreams disappoint the sleeper
By the eloquent ones' betrayal after the mute ones' fidelity.
After the loyalty of sleep comes the betrayal of consciousness

And how can he ask his anklet to conceal
How can it hide its anklet secretly
A secret, when his jeweled sash has already informed on him?
When the gown has slipped and uncovered it

When he gazes, death folds the unarmored
If it cries the fates disappoint it
Together with the armored; his glance bristles with weapons.
So the gaze complains while adorned for battle

And never did lightning flash from his mouth
And when lightning flashed from its horizon
Without bubbles gleaming upon wine.
A loved one appeared atop the sands

As though he were a meadow drenched with dew,
As if it were a garden watered
With an evening draught of dew and a morning draught.
With dew and morning showers

If the rain's tears shower within it,
If the tears of life rained down
It stays refreshed by the south wind's breaths.
It remains with the breaths of ostriches comforting it

So the gaze may be made languid by narcissus;
So if a narcissus hurts its eyes
And the cheek is a rose, and mouths are daisies.
The cheek is a rose and the lips red corals

He heeded the reprover, while love's inclination
It listened to the flirtatious words
Was toward him—may no lover be frightened by a reprover!
No morning remnant startled by the madness of love

Like an infatuated horse if assured
The jinn of exuberance make him scent fresh vigor.
The jinn of passion perceives its scent

I am fair when it is unjust and I support it when
He assails me, and I meet defiance with submission.
It treats me right and I surrender myself with humility

For error is right guidance, and my abasement before him
Passion is maturity and my surrender to it
In love is honor, and my corruption righteousness.
Is honor and my corruption is righteousness

Ardor may boil within me
My eyes, at its urging, persist in gazing high.
Making my eyes sparkle with desire

With a deadly strike or a stab
From which the wounds' eyes narrow.
From which bleeding eyes negotiated

Today the surface of dawn is reddened
Its flanks bright-polished by Mashrafi swords.

The slender-waisted date palm complains to the echo
Until quenched with spilled blood.
Until it is satiated by the ripe fruits

For the Arhabi she-camels are spent and weary.
For we are plump and fertile

Thunder, with its rumbling, made them hear
Thunder heard it with its ties
The camel-driver's urging call behind the milk-camels.
As the guide followed behind the herds

Lightning intervened in its journey
It veered away before the downpours of its rain.
Before the demise of its life withdrew

It flashes with lightning, and how often
Of its rain from its udders when it came in view!

It describes the father of caves in its good tidings
Would that it resembled him in generosity!
If only he resembled it in generosity

When we reach the pillar of the faith we

Will not disturb the youths by clashing cups

The most magnificent cold has not embraced
By sin are its two hems, thanks to his piety.
In its fringes, wings of piety

Broad strides stretched long by enemies.
A line elongated by enemies spreading wide

His resolve when the struggle intensified

With ambition that distracts from demise
Toward which success has stretched its necks.
And success has extended its valleys to it

A majestic youth between adversity
Who has never drawn a favor through panegyric.
Who did not earn recognition with praise

So he divorced the gift before the marriage.
So he rejected gifts before marriage
