سَحَبَtrailed الشَّيبُgray hair بِفوديalong my two temples ذَيلَهُits hem
وَتَجافَتْand drew away عَنهُfrom it رَبَّاتُladies of الكِلَلْthe canopies
Gray hair trailed its hem along my temples.
Gray hair dragged its tail across my temples,
And the ladies behind the canopies drew away from it.
And the maidens with braided tresses deserted me.
وَلَقَدand indeed كانَused to خِصاصُthe chinks of الخِدرِthe curtained chamber بيbecause of me
يَسأَلُask البيضَthe fair women رِقاعاًpatches مِنof مُقَلْeyes
And once, because of me, the chinks in the curtained chamber
Many times my proud fortress asked
would ask the fair women for patches made of eyes.
White banners for protection against fate.
فَطَوىso folded up بُردَthe mantle of شَبابيmy youth زَمَنٌtime
بَزَّrobbed عوديmy stem ماءَهُits sap حَتىّuntil ذَبَلْit withered
So time folded up the mantle of my youth,
The time of my youth has been folded away
robbing my stem of its sap until it withered.
By a torrent that snapped my wood until it withered.
واِشتِعالُand the blaze of الهَمِّsorrow فيin قَلبيmy heart عَلاrose to
بِقِناعِwith a veil of الشَيبِgray hair رأسيmy head فاِشتَعَلْand so it blazed
And the blaze of sorrow in my heart rose
As the flames of care grew more intense in my heart,
to my head in a veil of gray, and my head blazed.
My gray hair blazed out from under its disguise.
