يُعَيِّرُنيhe reproaches me أَخوa man of عِجلٍʿIjl إِبائيmy proud refusal
عَلىdespite عُدميmy poverty وَتيهيand my haughtiness واِختياليand my swagger
A man of ʿIjl reproaches me for my proud refusal,
despite my poverty, and for my haughtiness and swagger.
وَيَعلَمُand he knows أَنَّنيthat I فَرَطٌa forerunner لِحيِّfor a clan
حَمَوْاthey defended خُطَطَthe domains المَعاليof glory بِالعواليwith lofty spears
And he knows I am a forerunner for a clan
who defended the domains of glory with lofty spears.
فَلَستُso I am not بحاصِنٍa chaste man إِنif لَمnot أُزِرهاI bring to them
عَلىin a state of نَهَلٍthirst شَباthe points الأَسَلِof the lances الطِّوالِthe long
So I am no man of honor unless I bring to those domains
the thirsting points of long lances.
وَإِنand if بَلَغَattain الرِّجالُthe men مَدايَmy utmost reach فيماin what
أُحاوِلُهُI strive for it فَلَستُthen I am not مِنamong الرِّجالِmen
And if men reach as far as I do in what
I strive for, then I am no man.
