سِوايَsomeone other than me يَكونُmay be عُرْضَةَa target for مُسْتَريثِone who finds him slow
وَيَصْدِفُand turns away عَنْfrom نِداءِthe call of المُسْتَغِيثِone seeking rescue
Let another be the target of reproach for delay,
And turn away from the cry of one seeking aid;
وَيَأْلَفُand grows fond of غِمْدَهُits sheath الذَّكَرُthe hard-steeled sword اليَمانِيYemeni
وَيَنْبوand glances off نَبْوَةَthe recoil of السَّيْفِthe sword الأنِيْثِsoft-steeled
And let his hard-steeled Yemeni blade grow fond of its sheath,
And glance off as a soft-steeled sword does.
وَإِنْand if لَبِسَhe dons العَجاجَةَthe battle-dust ضَلَّhe loses his way فِيهاwithin it
ضَلالَthe disappearance of المِشْطِthe comb فيin الشَّعْرِthe hair الأَثِيثِthick and luxuriant
And if he dons the battle-dust, he is lost within it,
As a comb is lost in thick hair.
فَلَسْتُfor I am not إِذاwhen النَّوائِبُcalamities أَجْهَضَتْنِيdrive me hard
بِواهٍat all weak فيamid الخُطوبِadversities وَلاnor مَكيثِslow to act
For when calamities assail me, I am neither
Weak amid adversity nor slow to act.
يَهابُfears شَراسَتيmy fierceness قِرْنيmy rival وَخِلِّيand my close friend
أَفيءُI return بِهِwith him إِلىto خُلُقٍa disposition دَميثِgentle
My rival fears my fierceness; as for my friend,
With him I return to a gentle disposition.
وَأُولِغُand I make lap up صَارِمِيmy keen sword وَالمَوْتُwhile death يَتْلُوfollows
شَباهُits edge مُجاجَةَa mouthful spat out العَلَقِof thick blood النَّفيثِspat forth
And I make my keen sword lap up—while death follows
Its edge—a mouthful of thick blood spat forth.
وَلِلْعافيand for the supplicant بِعَقْوَتِيin my courtyard احْتِكامٌfull sway
علىover شِيَمٍcharacter traits تَرِفُّflutter عَلَيْهِover him مِيثِgentle
And the seeker of bounty in my courtyard has full sway
Over gentle virtues that flutter above him.
وَليand I have ذِمَمٌcovenants إِذاwhen شُدَّتْare fastened عُراهَاtheir bonds
فَماso they do not تَفْتَرُّpart عَنْto reveal عَهْدٍa pledge نَكيثِbroken
And I have covenants: once their bonds are fastened,
They never part to reveal a broken pledge.
فَهَاso here أَنَاI am أَكْرَمُthe noblest of الثَّقلَيْنِhumans and jinn طُرَّاًall together
أَبَاًfather فَأَبَاًthen father إِلىback to نُوحٍNoah وَشِيثِand Seth
So here I am, noblest of all humans and jinn,
Father after father, back to Noah and Seth.
وَأَفْصَحُand the most eloquent of مَنْthose who يُقَوِّمُstraighten دَرْءthe crookedness of قَوْلٍspeech
يَجُوتُtraverses الأَرْضَthe earth بالعَنَقِat a trot الحَثِيثِswift
And the most eloquent of those who straighten crooked speech
That traverses the earth at a swift trot.
وَلِيand I have كَلِمٌwords أَطايِبُchoice حِيْنَwhen يَشْدوchant
رُواةُreciters of السُّوءِevil بالْكَلِمِin words الخَبيثِvile
And mine are choice words, while they chant—
The reciters of evil—in foul words.
تُحَلُare loosened حُباknee-bands المُلوكِof kings لَهاfor them ارْتِياحَاًin delight
وَتَهْزَأُand they mock بِالفَرَزْدَقِat al-Farazdaq وَالْبَعيثِand al-Ba'ith
Kings' knee-bands are loosened in delight at them,
And my words mock al-Farazdaq and al-Ba'ith.
فَنِمَّso spread word بِماof what تَرَىyou see ياO نَجْدُNajd مِنِّيof me
وإِيهٍand tell more ياO تِهامَةُTihamah عَنْabout حَدِيثيmy story
So spread word, O Najd, of what you see of me,
And tell more, O Tihamah, of my story.
