عَرَضَتْappeared وَالنَّجمُwhile the stars واهٍloose عِقدُهُtheir necklace
حرَّدٌaloof women مُعتَجِرَاتٌwith heads wrapped بِمِنَىat Mina
They appeared while the stars’ necklace hung loose—
aloof women, their heads wrapped, at Mina,
فيin مُروطٍcloaks وَلَّعَتهاmottled them عَبرَتيmy tears
لاnot سَقيطُthe falling الطَلِّof dew عِندَbeside المُنحَنَىthe bend
in cloaks mottled by my tears,
not by falling dew beside the bend.
فَرأَتthen she saw آثارَهاtheir traces داميَةًbloodied
ذاتُa woman with خَصرٍa waist كادَalmost يُخفيهِhides it الضَّنَىwasting sickness
Then she saw their bloodied traces—
she whose waist wasting sickness almost hid.
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said مَنwho بَكىwept مِنّاon our account دَماًblood
وَهوَwhile he لاdoes not يَخشىfear عَلَيناupon us الأَعيُنَاwatchful eyes
Then she said, “Who wept blood on our account,
without fearing watchful eyes upon us?”
عَبرَةٌa tear لَمdid not يَرَsee مَنthe one who أَسبَلَهاshed it
أَحَدٌanyone إِلّاexcept رَفيقيmy companion وَأَناand I
A tear—the one who shed it was not seen
by anyone but my companion and me.
إِنَّindeed لِلعاشِقِfor the lover جَفناًan eyelid خَضِلاًmoist
يُوَدِعُdeposits الأَحزانَsorrows قَلباًa heart ضَمِناailing
Indeed, the lover has a tear-wet eyelid
that lodges sorrows in an ailing heart.
وَلَهُand he has دَمعٌtears إِذاwhen وَقَّرَهُhe stills them
طاشَburst forth مِنfrom شَوقِlonging يَهيجُstirs الحَزَناgrief
And he has tears which, when he tries to still them,
burst forth from longing that stirs grief.
وَبِنَفسيand with my life as ransom هيَshe وَالسِّربُand the bevy الَّتِيwho
توقِظُawakens الرَّكبَthe caravan إِذاwhen الصُّبحُdawn دَناdraws near
My life for her and for the bevy who
wake the caravan when dawn draws near,
بِعُيونٍwith eyes سَحَرَتْbewitched وَهْيَwhile they are ظُباًsword-edges
وَقُدودٍand figures خَطَرَتswayed وَهيwhile they are قَناspears
with eyes that bewitched, though they were blades,
and figures that swayed, though they were spears.
فَتَنَتْنِيshe bewitched me وَالَّذيand whoever يُبصِرُهاbeholds her
فيon لَياليthe nights الحَجِّof pilgrimage يَلقىencounters الفِتَناtemptations
She bewitched me, and whoever beholds her
on pilgrimage nights encounters temptations.
ثُمَّthen لاحَflashed البَرقُthe lightning يَفريcleaves ظُلَماًlayers of darkness
حينَwhen يَسريtravels by night وَهوَwhile it is عُلْوِيُّlofty in السَّناradiance
Then lightning flashed, cleaving layers of darkness,
as it coursed by night, its radiance high above.
فَشَجانيso it grieved me ذاthis وَهاتيكَand that woman مَعاًtogether
أَيُّwhat خَطْبٍcalamity طَرَقَvisited by night الصَبَّthe lovesick man هُناhere
So this lightning and that woman stirred my grief together.
What calamity has visited the lovesick man here!
وَأَرانيand showed me البَرقُthe lightning إِذwhen أَرَّقَنيkept me awake
بِمِنىًat Mina مِنfrom أَرضِthe land نَجدٍNajd حَضَناḤaḍan
And the lightning, as it kept me awake, showed me
Ḥaḍan in the land of Najd, while I was at Mina—
مَنزِلٌa dwelling حَلَّsettled بِهِin it ليof mine سَكَنٌa beloved
بَعدَماafter اختارَchose فؤاديmy heart وَطَناa home
a dwelling where a beloved of mine had settled,
after choosing my heart as a home.
كُلَّماwhenever شِئتُI wished تَأَمَّلتُI contemplated لَهُof him
مَنظَراًa sight أَصبوI yearn إِلَيهِtoward it حَسَناbeautiful
Whenever I wished, I gazed upon my beloved’s
lovely form, toward which I yearned,
وَملأتُand I filled السَّمعَthe hearing مِنّيof mine كَلِماًwords
يَحسُدُenvies القَلبُthe heart عَلَيهاfor them الأُذُناthe ear
and filled my hearing with words
for which the heart envies the ear.
