A faint little flash of lightning shone at al-ʿUdhayb,

and the fold of my baldric became a channel for tears.

It drowsed in the bosom of the clouds, as though it were

a polished sword, keen along both edges.

Its radiance lights the tribe's camp at al-Liwā,

and a thundering evening cloud drenches it with rain.

I eye it sidelong with a falcon's eye,

whose darting glances are all swift.

He watches flocks of sandgrouse swept along

by a cold, damp wind, wild in its blowing.

So he swooped upon them, hungry—he had in his care

    a tiny, yellow-downed chick—

with a hooked beak, blood coursing around its edges,

and hooked talons whose tips are mimicked by spearheads.

So every one of them was left cast down,

wounded, or slain and drained of life.

Ah, that lightning which robbed my eye

of its sleep, while flocks of tears streamed down!

It flashed toward Najd, and a little she-camel moaned,

a braided tether contending with her overflowing high spirits.

I share her anguish and ardent yearning,

yet the ʿAbshamī's patience is noble.

I have only the night-roaming lightning or the east wind

as a messenger to where the Euphrates races.

My riding camels long for the waters of al-Ṣarāt,

while my companions camp on Zarnarūdh's two banks.

What, longing—when between us lie the depths of deserts

before which swift trot and easy amble fail?

Ah, if only I knew: shall I see myself in bliss,

spending nights along its reaches and resting at noon?

Air like the days of love, never lacking

    a languid breeze like beautiful women's glances;

and a time, tender at both fringes, with

    freshness and charm spreading over its two cheeks;

and a land whose pebbles are pearls, and whose soil

breathes musk, while its waters are wine.

    ولَيْلي قَصيرٌ والهَجيرُ أصيلُ

    There living is fresh, and life delectable;

my night is short, and noonday heat is like late afternoon.

So tell my dear friends in Baghdad: 'Have you

found solace? With me are lamentation and wailing.'

The memory of you makes me sway, as though

red wine were swaying me whenever I sway.

Though my days of joy in your nearness were brief,

my night is long with your dwelling so far away.

Around me are people—God knows that I

count for little through them, though through me they count for much.

When experience probes them, alike appear

their natures, matching one another like spearpoints.

Had we not left Mecca's gravelly valley, there would have shone

the forehead-blazes and white stockings of our glory.

Whenever the house of Ibn ʿAffān is named, sobs shake

the rugged uplands, and the plains of the Hijaz lament.

To glory's shame, their dwellings greet dusk and dawn

as worn-out traces and deserted ruins.

There the doe teaches her fawns to walk,

and through them the winds drag their trailing skirts.

Rouse them, Abū Ḥassān, humped camels that seem

like girth-straps circling round their own middles.

For Ilyās the Nizārī disapproves of our lingering,

and Khindif, the Ḥimyarī's daughter, reproaches us.

If my ambition does not proclaim noble deeds,

obscurity clings to me—far be that from my eminence!

The daughter of al-Muʿāwī taunts me for living far from home,

yet every rising is followed by a setting.

She marvels that, from wrestling with separation,

I am lean; yet the spear's shaft too is slender.

If she censures my leanness, my keen sword

is courted by slenderness along its two cutting edges.

Nor have the days done anything new in striking me with disaster,

for blood-feuds lie between me and misfortunes.
