سَقىmay water اللهُGod مِنْamong رَمْلَتَيْthe two sand tracts of عالِجٍʿĀlij
أَشَمَّa lofty peak بِذَيْلِwith the hem of الغَمامِthe clouds انْتَطَقْgirdled itself
May God water, amid the twin sands of ʿĀlij,
a lofty peak girdled with the clouds’ hem,
وَلَيْلاًand a night أَحَمَّjet-black الحَواشِيthe fringes جَثاcrouched
علىupon صَفْحَةِthe face of الأرْضthe earth مِنْهُfrom it غَسَقْdarkness
and a night with jet-black fringes, when there crouched
upon the face of the earth its darkness.
وَعِنْديand beside me أَغَنُّa sweet, nasal-voiced beloved أَظُنُّI think الصَّباحَthe dawn
إِذاwhen لاحَit gleams مِنْfrom وَجْههِhis face مُسْتَرَقْstolen
And beside me was a sweet-voiced beloved; I think the dawn,
when it gleams, is stolen from his face.
وَلَمَّاand when رَأَيْناwe saw رِداءَthe mantle of الدُّجَىnight’s darkness
لَقىًcast aside بِيَدِby the hand of الفَجْرِdawn عَناaway from us يُشَقّis torn
And when we saw the mantle of night
cast aside, torn from us by the hand of dawn,
جَرَتْflowed عَبْرَةٌa tear رَقْرَقَتْهاmade it well up النَّوىparting
علىupon وَجْنَةٍa cheek هِيَit (the cheek) مِنْهاthan it (the tear) أَرَقّmore delicate
a tear flowed, which parting had brought forth,
upon a cheek more delicate than the tear.
وَكُنْتُand I would إِذاwhenever زارَنيhe visited me مَوْهِناًlate at night
أَذُودI drive away الكَرىslumber وأُناجِيand I commune with الأرَقْsleeplessness
And whenever he visited me late at night,
I would drive off slumber and commune with sleeplessness.
وَيَقْصُرُand grows short لَيْلِيَmy night حَتّىuntil يَكاalmost (beginning of يَكادُ)
دُcompletion of يَكادُ (‘almost’) يَعْلَقُclings to ذَيْلَthe hem of الصَّباحِdawn الشَّفَقْtwilight
And my night would grow so short that
twilight almost clung to the hem of dawn.
