نَزَلناwe camped بِنُعمانat Nuʿmān الأَراكِof the arak trees وَلِلنَّدىand the dew had
سَقيطٌfalling drops بِهِwith it اِبتَلَّتْbecame wet عَلَيناupon us المَطارِفُthe bordered cloaks
We camped at Nuʿmān of the arak trees, while the dew
Fell in drops, wetting the bordered cloaks we wore.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أُعانيenduring الوَجدَlove’s anguish وَالرَكبُwhile the riders نُوَّمٌwere asleep
وَقَدand already أَخَذَتْhad taken a toll مِنَّاon us السُّرىnight journeys وَالتَّنائِفُand barren wastes
So I spent the night enduring love’s anguish, while the riders slept,
Though night journeys and barren wastes had worn us down.
وَأَذكُرُand I recall خَوداًa tender maiden إِنif دَعانيcalls me عَلىdespite النَّوىseparation
هَواهاlove for her أَجابَتهُanswer it الدُّموعُthe tears الذَّوارِفُstreaming
And I recall a tender maiden: if, despite our separation, I am called
By love for her, my streaming tears answer it.
لَهاshe has فيin مَحانيthe bends of ذَلِكَthat الشِّعبِthe ravine مَنزِلٌa dwelling
لَئِنeven if أَنكَرَتهُfails to recognize it العَينُthe eye فالقَلبُthen the heart عارِفُknows
She has a dwelling in the bends of that ravine;
Even if the eye fails to recognize it, the heart knows it.
وَقَفتُI stood بِهِat it وَالدَّمعُwhile the tears أَكثَرُهُmost of it دَمٌblood
كَأَنِّيَas though I مِنْfrom عَينيmy eye بِنَعمانَat Nuʿmān راعِفُbleeding
I stood there, my tears mostly blood,
As though at Nuʿmān I were bleeding from my eye.
