I say to my companion, as passion draws forth

at Wajrah tears that tread upon the eyelids:

“Weep less, for my worn-out mount

is nearly driven mad by longing.”

Then, just before dawn, gray doves kept us awake,

there regaling our ears with melodies.

And he and I spent the night, torn by what

makes love for Su'ad prolong our yearning.

May they be shot with arrows dripping death,

and never rear a chick as long as we live!

Is it for love of slender forms, which resemble

moringa boughs, that they frequent the branches?

And have they wept from longing for one lost?

For longing makes the sorrowful weep.

And the truest of us in love is he who sheds

tears—so which of us has wetter eyes?

And the doves do not know what it is

that inspires our wailing as they perch on the tamarisks.

And I stifle a sigh: should my breath by night reach

their neck-rings with it, it would bring them death.

    فَقالَ لَها سَجيري أَسعِدينا

    And a cooing dove wept close beside me;

then my close companion said to her: “Join us in mourning,

    وَحِنّي ما اِستَطَعتِ وَشَوِّقينا

    and wail as much as you wish to wail;

and moan as much as you can, and stir our longing.

For you have reminded us of an old sorrow—

and what love at Idam have we forgotten?

Could we forget—no, by Him to whose House Quraysh

made pilgrimage—the beloved, while you remember?”
