لَحَىmay curse اللهُGod دَهراًan age لاnot نَزالُwe cease to be دَريئَةًa target
لِضَرَّاءfor affliction يَرْمِيناit shoots at us بِهاwith it فَيُصِيبُand hits its mark
May God curse an age in which we remain a target
for affliction it hurls at us, striking true.
وَيُنْجِدُand goes upland بِيwith me طَوْراًat times وَطَوْراًand at times يَغُورُdescends to the lowlands بيwith me
كَأَنِّيas though I علىover ماwhat فيis in البِلادِthe lands رَقِيبُa watchman
It takes me now to the highlands, now down to the lowlands,
as though I were a watchman over what the lands contain.
وَلَماand when أَزارَتْنيbrought me to visit النَّوَىseparation أَرْضَthe land of عامِرٍʿAmir
بَكَىwept صَاحِبيmy companion وَالحَيُّwhile the tribe مِنْهُto him قَريبُnear
And when separation brought me to the land of ʿAmir,
my companion wept, though the tribe was near him.
فَلِيمَso he was blamed وَمَعْذُورٌthough excusable علىfor الهَمِّgrief والبُكاand weeping
رَمِيٌّstricken بِماby what يُقْذِيirritates العُيونَthe eyes كَئِيبُsorrowful
He was blamed, though excusable for his grief and weeping—
stricken by what stings the eyes, sorrowful.
وَقَالواand they said يَمانٍa Yemeni رَوَّعَتْهُterrified him مَهامِهٌtrackless wastes
أَبَتْrefused أَنْthat يَرىshould see فيهاwithin them المَواردَthe watering places ذِيبُa wolf
And they said, "A Yemeni, frightened by trackless wastes
that denied even a wolf the sight of watering places within them."
وَثَارواand they rushed إِلىtoward نِضْويmy gaunt mount يُفَدُّونَoffering themselves as ransom فَوْقَهُupon it
أُشَيْعِثَa tousled youngster يُدْعَىis called لِلندىto generosity فَيُجيبُand answers
They rushed to my gaunt mount, pledging their lives for the man upon it—
a tousled youth who answers whenever generosity calls.
وَمَنْand whoever بَاتَspends the night مَرْهومَrain-wetted الرِّداءِthe cloak بِدَمْعِهِwith his tears
فَماyet there is no فيin دُموعيmy tears لِلخُطوبِfor misfortunes نَصيبُshare
And whoever may spend the night with his cloak rain-soaked by his tears,
misfortunes have no share in my tears.
وَقَالتْand said سُلَيْمىSulayma إِذْwhen رَأَتْنيshe saw me لِتِرْبهاto her age-mate
وَراقَهُماand charmed them both وَجْهٌa face أَغَرُّradiant مَهيبُawe-inspiring
And Sulayma said to her age-mate when she saw me,
while a radiant, awe-inspiring face charmed them both:
أَظُنُّI think الفَتىthe youth مِنْof عَبْدِʿAbd شَمْسٍShams فَإِنْand if يَكُنْshould be
أَبُوهُhis father أَبَاAbu سُفْيانَSufyan فَهْوَthen he is نَجيبُnobly born
"I think the youth is of ʿAbd Shams; and if
his father is Abu Sufyan, then he is nobly born.
أَرَىI see وَجْهَهُhis face طَلْقاًcheerful يُضيءُilluminates جَبينَهُhis brow
وَأَحْسَبُand I think أَنَّthat الصَّدْرَthe breast مِنْهُof him رَحيبُbroad
I see his face open and cheerful, lighting up his brow,
and I think his breast is broad.
سَليهِask him يُكلِّمْناhe will speak to us فإِنَّfor indeed اخْتِيالَهُhis proud bearing
علىdespite ماwhat بِهِafflicts him مِنْof خَلَّةٍpoverty لَعَجيبُtruly astonishing
Ask him to speak to us, for his proud bearing,
despite the poverty he suffers, is truly astonishing."
فَقُلْتُso I said غُلامٌa youth مِنْof أُمَيَّةَUmayya شَاحِبٌpale
بِأَرْضِكُماin your land (you two) نائيfar-off المَزارِthe place of visitation غَريبُa stranger
I said, "A pale youth of Umayya,
a stranger in your land, far from home.
وَلَيْسَand it is not بِبدْعٍunheard-of أَنْthat يُخَفِّضَhe should calm جَأْشَهُhis heart
علىdespite عُدْمِهِhis destitution حيثُwhere المَرادُthe pasture جَديبُbarren
Nor is it strange that he should keep his heart calm
despite his destitution, where the pasture is barren.
فَمِنْfor among شِيَمِthe ways of الأَيّامِtime أَنْthat يُسْلَبَbe stripped of الغِنىwealth
حَسيبٌa well-born man وَأَنْand that يُكْسَىbe clothed in الهَوانَhumiliation أَديبُa learned man
For it is time's way that wealth be stripped
from the well-born, and a learned man clothed in humiliation."
فقالَتْthen she said وَلمand did not تَمْلِكْhold back سَوابِقَthe first rush of عَبْرَةٍtears
أَقمْstay عِنْدَناwith us إنَّindeed المَحلَّthe dwelling place خَصيبُfertile
She said, unable to hold back the first rush of tears,
"Stay with us; the land here is fertile.
وَحَوْلَكَand around you مِنْfrom حَيَّيْكَyour two tribes قَيسٍQays وَخِنْدِفٍand Khindif

Around you, from your two tribes, Qays and Khindif,
are mature men and greybeards, lavishly hospitable to guests."
وماand not عَلِمَتْshe knew أَنِّيthat I لأَمْرٍfor a purpose أَرُومُهُI pursue it
أَطوفُI roam وَراجِيand one who hopes in اللهِGod ليسَdoes not يَخيبُmeet disappointment
She did not know that, for a purpose I pursue,
I roam; one who hopes in God is not disappointed.
فَلاso may not أَلِفَتْgrow familiar with نَفْسيmy soul العُلاglory إِنْif طَوَيْتُهاI fold it
علىaround اليَأْسِdespair ماas long as حَنَّتْmoaned yearningly روائِمُdoting mothers نِيبُold she-camels
So may my soul never know glory if I fold it
around despair, as long as doting old she-camels moan.
