سَرَىtraveled by night البَرْقُthe lightning وَهْناًlate at night فَاسْتَحَنَّتَso moaned with longing جِمَالِياًmy camels
وَأَخْطَرَand brought ذِكْرَىthe memory of أُمِّUmm (mother of) عَمْرو‘Amr بِبالِياto my mind
Lightning coursed late at night, and my camels moaned with longing,
And it brought the memory of Umm ‘Amr to my mind.
وَقَدْand already كُنْتُI had been عَمّاfrom what يُعْقِبُbrings about الجَهْلَfolly نازِعاًturning away
وَمِنْand from أَرْيَحِيّاتِthe raptures of الصّبابَةِpassionate longing سَالِياfree of longing
Though I had turned away from what breeds folly,
And left behind the raptures of passionate longing.
فَبَرَّحَso tormented بِيme شَوْقٌa longing أَرانِيthat showed me بِثَغْرِهاin her mouth
وَدَمْعِيand my tears وَعِقْدَيْهاand her two necklaces وَشِعْريand my verse لآلِياpearls
Then longing tormented me, showing me in her mouth,
And in my tears, her two necklaces, and my verse—pearls.
وَذَكّرنيand reminded me of لَيْلاًa night بِحُزْوىat Huzwa مَنَحْتُهُI gave it
هَوىًa love تَحْسُدُenvy الأيّامُthe days فِيهِfor it اللَّيالِياthe nights
And reminded me of a night at Huzwa, to which I gave
A love for which the days envy the nights.
وَأَصْبَحَand began أَدْنَىthe closer of صَاحِبَيَّmy two companions يَلومُنيreproaching me
فَماso what لَكَis it to you ياO بْنَson of الهَاشِمِيِّal-Hashimi وَمَالِياand what is it to me
And the closer of my two companions began reproaching me:
So what business have you with me, O son of al-Hashimi?
تُكَلِّفُنيyou burden me with مَاwhat لاnot أُطِيْقُI can bear وَقَدْand already وَهَتْhave weakened
حِبالُكِyour cords حَتّىuntil زايَلَتْهاparted from them حِبالِياmy cords
You burden me with what I cannot bear, despite the weakening
Of your cords, till my cords have parted from them.
أَمَاare ... not? نَحْنُwe فَرْعَاtwo branches of دَوْحَةٍa spreading tree غَالِبِيَّةٍof Ghalib
بِحَيْثُwhere تُناجِيcommune with المَكْرُماتُnoble deeds المَعالِياlofty honors
Are we not two branches of a spreading tree of Ghalib,
Where noble deeds commune with lofty honors?
وَكُنَّاand we were عَقِيدَيْtwo bound by أُلْفَةٍintimacy وَمَوَدَّةٍand affection
فَكَيْفَso how اجْتَنَيْناdid we reap مِنْfrom تَصافٍsincere friendship تَقالِياmutual hatred
And we were bound together in intimacy and affection;
How, then, did we reap mutual hatred from sincere friendship?
وَلَوْand even if خَالفَتْopposed فيin الحُبِّlove وَهْيَthough it is كَريمَةٌdear
عَلَيَّto me يَمِينيmy right hand فَارَقَتْهاwould part from it شِمَالِياmy left hand
And even if it opposed me in love, though it is dear
To me—my right hand—my left would part from it.
رُزِقْتَmay you be granted الهُدىguidance وَاللهُand God مَغْوٍone who leads astray وَمُرْشِدٌand one who guides
فَدَعْنيso leave me وَماand what أَخْتارُهُI choose it مِنْof ضَلالِياmy error
May you be granted guidance; God leads astray and guides,
So leave me to my chosen error.
