    A little lightning-flash appeared, gleaming,

to a love-stricken man who does not sleep,

and stirred a longing that had always

    lain enclosed within his ribs.

And from its radiance came in succession

    beguiling flashes;

    but between my gaze

and those flashes came my tears.

And how could the eye be kept free of

tears by a heart in pain?

    It yearned for Najd, although

the way there had been barred.

And I said, when Abu al-

Mighwar yearned, valiant though he was

    and never, beneath the blows

    of calamity, one to quail:

If his timber has weakened beneath them,

even a Mashrafi blade can be tarnished.

    To Wadi al-Ghada there is,

    I think, no return.

And the pale camels have lacked

    pasture at al-Nuqayb.

For there is no thirst-quenching water there,

    nor any lush grazing ground.

And beneath their girth-straps they are

as thin as the straps themselves.

Patience! For I have been kept awake

by your repeated cries of longing.

Ah, how dear are Najd and Rayya,

    and al-Hima and al-Ajraʿ,

    and its dusky shade; around

    it lies a brimming pool.

    Rayya, for whom was chosen

a spring abode at Dhu al-Arak:

hungry at her two sashes, yet

    her bracelet is well fed.

I long for her, and my heart

    is wholly given to passion.

And between us lie deserts, which the forelegs

    of swift she-camels measure out.

Why, then, should my ears, with blame,

    be assailed if I yearn,

    when even the headstrong camels

    long for their familiar companions?
