صَدَّتْshe turned away أُمَيْمَةُUmayma حينَwhen لاحَappeared بِمَفْرِقيat the parting of my hair
شَيْبٌgray hair يُبَرِّحُinflicts severe torment بِالمُحِبِّupon the lover الوامِقِardently loving
Umayma turned away when there appeared at the parting of my hair
Gray hair that sorely torments the devoted lover.
لاdo not تُعْرِضِيturn away عَنِّيfrom me فَأَنْتِfor you جَنَيْتِهِyou brought it on
وَهَواكِand love of you قَنَّعَveiled بِالمَشيبِwith gray hair مَفارِقيthe partings of my hair
Do not turn away from me, for you brought it on;
And love of you veiled the partings of my hair in gray.
ولقدand indeed خَلَعْتُI bestowed عَلَيْكِupon you ماwhat اسْتَحْسَنْتُهُI deemed it beautiful
وَهُوَand it is الشَّبابُyouth وَذاكَand that جُهْدُutmost capacity العاشِقِof the lover
And indeed I bestowed upon you what I deemed beautiful:
My youth—and that is the utmost a lover can give.
وَتَرَكْتِنيand you left me أَرْعَىI watch النُّجومَthe stars بِناظِرٍwith an eye
يَشْكوcomplains of الغَرامَpassion إِلىto فُؤادٍa heart خَافِقِthrobbing
And you left me watching the stars with an eye
That complains of passion to a throbbing heart.
فَسَمَحْتُso I was generous حَتّىeven بِالْحُشاشَةِwith the last remnant of life فيin الهوىlove
وَبَخِلْتِand you were miserly حَتّىeven بِالخَيالِwith the dream-image الطارِقِvisiting by night
So in love I freely gave even my last remnant of life,
Yet you withheld even the dream-image that visits by night.
