    وَفي الأَزْدِ خالي لِلغَطارِفَةِ الزُّهْرِ

    I am the son of proud kings, from the stock of Khindif;

And my maternal uncle is among the radiant lords of the Azd,

Of those who trail full-length coats of mail into battle,

As though they were mature camels rising together in pools.

They make spearpoints visit their foes' vulnerable spots,

While the sleek, full-grown steeds have crouched on their haunches in the dust.

And in me is their generosity when gifts are grudged,

And their courage before the brown Rudayni spears.

Yet I was cast upon a son of the last night

By calamities that humbled the people's spokesman before a fool.

Sobriety shackles his hands until, when he grows tipsy,

He bestows a scant trifle—so thanks are due to drunkenness.
