قَلَّhave dwindled فيin الهَوىlove حيَليmy stratagems
ياO كَثيرَةَmuch given to المَلَلِboredom
My stratagems in love are few,
O you so easily bored!
كَمhow often أَبيتُI spend the night مُمتَرياًmilking
خِلفَthe teat of دَمعيَmy tears الهَطِلِstreaming
How often I spend the night milking
the teat of my streaming tears!
رُبَّmany a عَبرَةٍtear نَضَحَتْhas moistened
وَردَthe rose of خَدِّكِyour cheek الخَجِلِblushing
Many a tear has moistened
the rose of your blushing cheek.
لَيتَنيwould that I عَلىin عَجَلٍhaste
أَجتَنيهِI pluck it بِالقُبَلِwith kisses
Would that I could, in haste,
pluck it with kisses!
فالعَذولُfor the reproacher مُنتَظِرٌwaiting
أَنthat تُخَيِّبيyou dash أَمَليmy hope
For the reproacher is waiting
for you to dash my hope.
وَالمُحِبُّand the lover فيin كَمَدٍanguish
وَالعَذولُand the reproacher فيin جَذَلِdelight
And the lover is in anguish,
and the reproacher in delight.
فَالهَوىfor love وأَيسرُهand its lightest part
ماwhat تَرينَyou see مِنof وَجَلِيmy fear
For love—whose lightest part
is the fear you see in me—
هَلdoes يَخِفُّgrow light مَحمِلُهُits burden
ياO ثَقيلَةَheavy of الكَفَلِthe buttocks
can its burden grow light,
O heavy-haunched one?
