سَقىmay ... water الرَّملَthe sand مِنfrom أَجفانِthe eyelids of عَينيَّmy two eyes وَالحَياand the rain
وَثَغرِand the mouth of سُلَيمَىSulayma الدَّمعُthe tears وَالقَطرُand the raindrops وَالظَّلْمُand the cool saliva
May the sand be watered—from my eyelids, the rain,
and Sulayma’s mouth—by tears, raindrops, and cool saliva.
فَماso there is no بِهوىًof love بَينَbetween الضُّلوعِthe ribs أُجِنُّهُI conceal it
لِغَيرِfor anyone other than هُذَيمٍHudhaym صاحِبيmy companion أَوor لَهُfor him عِلمُknowledge
So the love I conceal between my ribs is known neither
to anyone other than Hudhaym, my companion, nor to him.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to أَلقىmeet عِندَهُat his place كُلَّevery غادَةٍgraceful young woman
حَصانٍchaste لَهاshe has فيamong قَومِهاher people شَرَفٌhigh standing ضَخمُgreat
And I used to meet at his place every graceful maiden,
chaste, of great standing among her people.
نأَتshe went far away فَدُموعيso my tears اللُّؤلؤُthe pearls النَّثرُscattered بَعدَهاafter her departure
وَليand I had قَبلَهُbefore it مِنfrom ثَغرِهاher mouth اللُّؤلؤُthe pearls النَّظْمُstrung together
She went far away; after her departure, my tears are scattered pearls.
And before that, mine were the strung pearls of her mouth.
وَكانَتْand were لَياليناour nights قِصاراًshort عَلىat الحِمَىthe protected pasture
فَلَستُso I am not بِناسيهِنَّforgetting them ماas long as طَلَعَrises النَّجمُthe star
And our nights at the protected pasture were short;
so I shall not forget them as long as the stars rise.
