أَضحَكَmade laugh المُزنُthe rainclouds رَوضَهاits garden بالبُكاءِwith weeping
This is her home at al-Khalsa.
This abode, on the hilltops,
The rainclouds made its garden laugh with their weeping.
Sorrow has made its garden smile through weeping,
وَكَساهاand clothed it الرَّبيعُspring حُلَّةَa robe of نَورٍblossoms

And spring clothed it in a robe of blossoms,
And spring has clothed it in a dress of light
woven by the fingertips of the rain-bearing stars.
Woven by the fingers of the breeze.

So ask the caravan to turn toward it,
Ask the caravans to incline toward it
with the chests of their worn-out riding-camels.
With the graceful camels' through-and-through.

رَعُcompletion of 'sandy tract' فيin مَيعَةِthe prime of الشَّبابِyouth رِدائيmy cloak
Indeed, it is a dwelling where the sandy tract swallowed
It is an abode where my youth found
my cloak in the full flush of youth.
Its garment hem in the water of life,
وَكأَنّيand as though I أَرىsee بِأَطلالِهِamid its ruins وَشa tattoo (word begins)

ماًcompletion of 'tattoo' خَفيّاًfaint بِمعصَمَيْon the two wrists of ظَمياءِZamya
And I seem to see amid its ruins a tattoo,
And it seems I see, among its ruins,
faint, upon Zamya's two wrists.
A fawn with two braceleted wrists.

Their earth is fragrant with maidens;
Gazelles that sand grooms, maidens
their gazelle counterparts have grown familiar with it.
That mountain roes love as their kin.

فيin حُقوقٍhips تُقِلُّهُنَّbear them رِواءِwell-watered
Like full moons upon thirsty boughs,
Like moons upon withering boughs
on well-watered hips that bear them.
In hollows that hardly hold them.

لُحْنَthey gleamed غِبَّafter الغَمامَةِthe cloud الوَطفاءِrain-heavy
If they smile, their teeth are daisies,
If they smile, the passes smile
gleaming after a rain-heavy cloud.
With the melody of a dormant cloud.

Slaked, when dawn spreads its two wings,
They quench their thirst when dawn reveals
are their tooth-cleaning sticks with tawny wine.
Their grazing, white as the arfaj shrub.
وَبِنَجدٍand in Najd لِلعَامِريَّةِfor the Amirite woman دارٌa home
بِرُباهاon its hills مُعَرَّسُthe resting-place of الأَهواءِpassions
And in Najd the Amirite woman has a home;
And, prominent through al-‘Amariyya, a house
upon its hills is the resting-place of passions.
Adorned as the winds adorn it.
غادَةٌa tender maiden تَملأُfills العيونَthe eyes جَمالاًwith beauty
هيَshe دائيmy sickness مِنهُنَّamong them وَهْيَand she شِفائيmy cure
A tender maiden fills the eyes with beauty;
A maiden who fills the eyes with beauty -
she is my sickness among them, and she is my cure.
She is my malady, she is my remedy.
فَتَملَّيتُهُنَّso I long enjoyed their company فيin عيشَةٍa life خَضْgreen (word begins)

راءَcompletion of 'green' تَندىis dewy كَروَضَةٍlike a garden غَنّاءِluxuriant
So I long enjoyed their company in a verdant life,
I enjoyed them in a verdant life
dewy as a luxuriant garden.
That rains as a singing garden (rains).
واِرغَوىand foamed up باطِليmy folly وَعاثَand ran riot بياضٌwhiteness

مِنfrom قَتيرٍgray hairs فيin لِمَّةٍlocks سَوداءِblack
And my folly foamed up, and whiteness ran riot,
So my foolishness has had its fling
from gray hairs amid black locks.
And left in my temple a swarthy-white lock,
وَظَلامُand the darkness of الشَّبابِyouth أَحسَنُfairer عِنديto me
مِنthan مَشيبٍgray hair يُظِلُّنيshades me بِضياءِwith light
And youth's darkness is fairer to me
And to me the darkness of youth
than gray hair that shades me with light.
Is fairer than the shining gray hair.

مِيmy (word completion) تَلَوَّىwrithes بِالزَفرَةِwith the sigh الصُّعْداءِdeep-drawn
And at the memory of that time, my chest
As for the memory of that time, my solace
writhes with a deep-drawn sigh.
Is a hot sigh on a flaming breath.

Whenever it kindles a fire upon my heart,
Whenever it kindles a fire in the heart,
my eyelid, O Umaym, chokes with water.
My eyelid, O mother of calamities, drips with water.
