I say to my companions, as I cast another glance

toward a soft sandy tract whose shades are moist with dew:

    حَبيبٌ إِلى نَفسي غَضاها وَضالُها

    There is a dwelling whose ruins decay has touched;

dear to my soul are its ghada and wild lote trees.

I see the worn-out, white she-camel gladdened by night travel

toward it, though her weariness has shortened her steps.

In it is a graceful maiden who distracts the gazelles with a glance,

so their fawn forgets its tender mother because of her.

And the riders have reported that calamities

befell her people until her circumstances changed.

Does she grieve that Time should deal harshly

with her, when my soul, my family, and her wealth are hers?
