زَأَرَ الأُسودُ الغُلْبُ دونَ عَرينِها
And many a spiteful foe I held back from a goal
And one who jested, I dissuaded him from going too far
before whose lair the thick-necked lions roared.
The lions roared, defeated beneath her den

We are indeed of Muʿāwiya's line; we extend hands
We, the Mu'awiyahs, extend our hands
in noble deeds, their left the equal of their right,
In generosity, its left like its right

from every man of noble lineage whom a freeborn woman bore—
From every noble stock, a filly was born
radiant, with nobility shining upon her brow—
A lively white blaze shone above her forehead

To the one with the slender waist, the traveller hastens
a stout-cheeked she-camel, the fold of her woven girth worn by travel.
The journey has worn out her flank and chest
وَإذاand when العُفاةُthe seekers of bounty تَيَمَّمَتْناheaded toward us عِيسُهُمْtheir pale camels

And when the petitioners' pale camels make for us,
And when the barefoot ones emigrated to us
they do not recall their homelands at the camels' yearning cries.
They did not yearn for their homelands

They range through pastures garlanded with watering places,
Pastures grew lush, endowed with springs
strutting between their sweet waters and running streams.
Meandering between ebb and flow
وَلَناand we have إِذاwhen العَرَبُthe Arabs اعْتَزَتْproclaimed their lineage جُرْثُومَةٌan ancestral rootstock
وَلَنا إِذا العَرَبُ اعْتَزَتْ جُرْثُومَةٌ

خُلِقَ النَّبِيُّ مُحَمَّدٌ مِنْ طِينِها
And ours, when the Arabs proclaim their lineage, is a rootstock
And we, when the Arabs are stirred up, have
from whose clay the Prophet Muhammad was created.
Muhammad, created from its clay
