بِمُرتَبَعٍat a spring encampment رَحبِspacious المَحَلِّthe site خَصيبِهِfertile in its grounds
And many a ravine we camped in, while life was still carefree,
A clan we descended upon, with life still full of joy,
at a spring encampment, spacious and fertile.
In a wide, fertile place of plenteous dwellings,
وَلَمand not يَكُwas فيناamong us ماجِدٌa noble man أَغمَدَsheathed النُّهَىreason
غرارَthe sharp edge الشَّبابِyouth المُنتَضَىunsheathed فيin مَشيبِهِhis gray-haired age
Nor was there among us a noble man whose reason had sheathed
Yet no glorious man among us has sheathed his sword,
youth's blade, still drawn in his gray-haired age.
The exuberant folly of impetuous youth in his dotage.
وَنَحنُand we بِوادٍin a valley خَيَّمَتْshe pitched camp أُمُّUmm (mother of) سالِمٍSalim

And we were in a valley; Umm Salim had pitched her tent
We in a valley encamped, where Umm Salim pitched
there, where the soil was moist and the vegetation tender and fresh.
A tent, on soft soil, of plants freshly green.
تَضَوَّعَwafted fragrance مِسكاًmusk حينَwhen ناجاهُwhispered to it ذَيلُهاher trailing hem
كَأَنَّas though مَحانيهِits bends مَذاكٍincense burners لِطيبِهِfor its fragrance
It breathed musk when her hem whispered to it,
She exuded musk when her train neared her,
as though its bends were censers for its fragrance.
As if her robes were steeped in its fragrance.
وَكَمand many مِنof نَهارٍa day ضَمَّjoined قُطرَيهِits two ends سَيرُناour journey
يَذوبُmelts الحَصىthe pebbles مِنfrom جَزعِهِits anguish فيin لَهيبِهِits blaze
And many a day our journey spanned from end to end,
How many days we journeyed, while the sun drew in
the pebbles melting from anguish in its blaze.
Its skirts, the pebbles melting from its heat?
وَلَيلٌand a night طَوَيناهُwe folded it away وَللرَكبِand for the riders طَربَةٌa thrill
إِذاwhenever عَبَّdrank deeply نَجمٌa star جانِحٌinclining فيin مَغيبِهِits setting
And a night we folded away, while the riders felt a thrill,
At night we folded the miles, the travelers cheered
whenever a star drank deep as it inclined to set.
When a shooting star streaked across the sky.
فَياso, O نازِليdwellers in رَملَthe sands of الحِمَىal-Hima (the protected pasture) هَلis there? لَدَيكُمُwith you
شِفاءٌa cure لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover داؤُهُhis illness مِنfrom طَبيبِهِhis physician
So, O dwellers in the sands of al-Hima, have you
You who camp on the dunes, can you provide
a cure for a lovesick man whose illness comes from his physician?
A cure for one whose illness comes from his healer?
وَفيكُمand among you قِرىًhospitality لِلطارِقينَfor night callers فَزارَكُمso he visited you
مُحِبٌّa lover لِيُقْرَىso he may be offered hospitality نَظرَةًa glance مِنfrom حَبيبِهِhis beloved
And you offer hospitality to night callers, so there came to you
You have settlements for visitors; yours we visited,
a lover, to be treated to a glance from his beloved.
A lover, to catch a glimpse of his beloved.
