وَهَيفاءَand a slender-waisted woman لاnot أُصغيI listen إِلىto مَنwhoever يَلومُنيblames me
عَلَيهاover her وَيُغرينيand entices me بِهاtoward her أَنthat يَعيبَهاhe finds fault with her
And a slender-waisted beauty—I heed no one who blames me
I do not listen to those who blame me
For her; his finding fault with her draws me to her.
For my love of her, though they decry her.
أَميلُI turn بِإِحدىwith one of مُقلَتَيَّmy two eyes إِذاwhen بَدَتْshe appears
إِلَيهاtoward her وَبالأُخرىand with the other أُراعيI watch رَقيبَهاher watcher
I turn one of my eyes, when she appears,
With a single eyelid I wink at her
Toward her, and with the other I watch her watcher.
When she appears, while with the other I mind her watcher.
وَقَدand indeed غَفَلَwas inattentive الواشيthe tale-bearer وَلَمand did not يَدرِknow أَنَّنيthat I
أَخَذتُI took لِعَينيfor my eye مِنfrom سُلَيمىSulayma نَصيبَهاits share
And the tale-bearer was inattentive and did not know that I
That slanderer is oblivious. Little does he know
Had taken for my eye its share of Sulayma.
That I got from Sulayma her share for my eyes!
